I have traction control as standard in my Mondeo which it's default setting is on.
Are their any disadvantages or advantages of switching it off to it or indeed any car with TC fitted? i.e. better fuel consumption, tyre wear, worse or better handling etc? Read more
You may or may not have heard of him, but I wes saddend to hear of the untimely passing last week of a well known ex. motor boss.. well within the Ford Motor company anyway. Lord Alex Trotman aged 71 who was Fords world big chief from 1993 to 1999.
What is even less well known is that the had a personal hand in the ill-fated buyout attempt of British Leyland in the late 70's. (Ford eventually got cold feet and pulled out.)
What is poigniant for me personally is I met Alex Trotman at Ford World Headquaters in Dearbourn Michigan in 1996 albeit briefly.
A genuine car guy and not a bean counter IMO and will be sadly missed by his family, ex colleagues and friends.

My 2003 Zetec Estate has 18" alloys and as advised by HJ I want to change to 16" wheels.
Can I just change them over or is any modification required? Read more
My Mondeo suffered with tramlining even on the Zetec 16" wheels
with Dunlop SP Sport 2000 tyres on the front. Since
changing these for Michelin Pilot Primacy the tramlining has disappeared, the
ride is a bit better, it doesn't spin the wheels anywhere
near as frequently and the road noise has reduced. They
also look like they will last significantly longer than 13k which
is all the Dunlops did.
13k is poor, the first three sets of fronts on my Mondeo lasted 25k/30k/25k a set, they were Conti SP 2/Conti SP/Conti SP, alignment is important, as I have said on these forums before I adjust the alignment myself by the way the car drives feels and get better than average wear.
Hi
I recently did a lot of miles on the motorway (Brum to Gatwick) and found that when I drove on the smaller roads around town the idle speed of the engine tends to "stick" before settling back down (when changing gear). I have also noticed that since then a). my fuel economy isnt the greatest and b). my *actual* idle speed, at rest, is a lot higher... nearer 1250 (c.f. around 8-900 previously).
When I owned a slightly older Fiesta the problem I had a similar problem that was much more apparent, especially when coming to a standstil... the revs would race super high and I would have to lower then my bringing the clutch to the bite point. On that occasion I had to buy a new idle speed control valve and that cleared the problem up.
Now... is it likely that although my current problem isnt anywhere as severe, it may be related to the same valve?
I remember reading somewhere how to disconnect the ecu for a period of time - apparently this can "re-set" the management system that may fix the problem. Is this likely to help and, if so, could someone tell me where it is located?!
Thans in advance guys.

Aha cheers DD - I have done the old 3A trick and so far so good...

Reading the long term test of the Auto Express Subaru Legacy, I was amazed to see that it needs a service after only 1000 miles and this cost £150!
Is this a misprint or is this really the case? I thought these early services were now done away with? If the garage do need to see it after 1000 miles, surely the service should be free?
Must be annoying buying a car knowing that in a couple of weeks time you are going to need to arrange to book it back in! Read more
I bought my Outback in February so am eligible for the current three years free sevicing offer but even if I were not the 1000 mile service would have been worthwhile for £50 or so. Even with modern machining and build methods brand new engines probably throw off a bit of swarf and muck in the first few hundred miles and for blokes like me who intend to run the car for ten years or so clean oil is the most important single item in the servicing regime. If you change your car every couple of years I suppose it does'nt matter though.
hi,
can anyone suggest a possible reason for the following problem with a 1.9 Diesel ZX.....
Car runs OK at town driving speeds. Put it on a motorway and sometimes after a while it starts blowing out clouds of white smoke and continues to accelerate. Pull over and leave it for a few minutes and it drives normally again for a while.
White smoke to me implies excess diesel. Accelerating ditto, which seems to me to indicate that the injector pump is doing something silly.
Is this a fimiliar symptom of a recognised fault, and can anyone suggest what the fault/solution might be?
Thanks Read more
Sounds like engine oil is being pushed into the intake & being burnt in combustion as extra fuel.
Are you sure the oil level is not over full.
If not why not try re-routing the engine breather into an old plastic bottle to see if :-
1 It collects any oil.
2 It cures the problem.
I've got a funny noise eminating from my Passat!
Under hardish acceleration in any gear, from 2000 to 3000 rpm I get a loud sound which is best described as "psssssssshhhhhh". It sounds like a load of air escaping - but performance isn't impaired, apart from a very slight hesitancy. It sounds like it's coming from the left hand side of the engine (as I look at the bonnet from the drivers seat)
Any ideas guys and gals?
Cheers,

Hi dieselboy, sorry that this reply is unrelated but yes i would like the IAM video you have,is it the "roadcraft" video? If so we must make contact, cheers! Kam
A follow on from Schoolboy's'worst car',what is the best car(s) you have had?Could be the most reliable/economical or just one that gave you a good time or brings back fond memories.
I'll start with an Anglia,it was the 1200,such power,I was a teenager,it was my first car.I thrashed it without mercy until the three bearing crank snapped one day.Undeterred I rebuilt a Cortina engine and dropped that in.Eventually four of us drove it to Morocco, sadly KLE 625D never made it back, but that's another story.
Another vehicle that sticks in my mind is a Renault 20 TS auto,it was supremely comfortable,no doubt designed for pave(should be an accent over the e)and went like a rocket on kickdown. It was fairly straight forward for a Renault of the period, although they managed to negate the usefulness of the hatchback by having some bizarre rear seat pivoting arrangement instead of simply folding down.

My present car, a BMW M3. A fabulous machine to drive, awesome acceleration, absolutely stable on the Autobahn at (an indicated) 270km/h, best brakes on anything not made by Porsche. Docile enough to use as daily transport, acceptable running costs and it has 4 seats which allowed me to justify buying it.
New defence maybe.

As usual he's swanned off somewhere, so I did it.
Oi! Some of us were covering the late shift.
Have looked at a 02 defender td5 with 25k on the clock, it looks fab and drives ok, but am worried about reliability especially gearboxes, have been told to walk away if anything about the gear change / clutch doesn't feel right. Is there anything else to look out for on these cars.

the early td5 defenders did have a clutch problem T /V reg where the clutch failed ,I know of 1 newer one which had a clutch problem but that was the slave cylinder .I have not heard of gearbox problems on td5 models.defender and disco units are basicaly the same unit, you could look on www.lro.com and see comments on the defender or disco forum ,you have to register to post questions.a big plus for problems with land rover is cheap parts and simple to work on,just stay away from the main dealer if you want to keep costs down
I'm sure mine flashes a light on the dashboard to tell me what I already know but does stuff all about it. (VW).
