Have looked at a 02 defender td5 with 25k on the clock, it looks fab and drives ok, but am worried about reliability especially gearboxes, have been told to walk away if anything about the gear change / clutch doesn't feel right. Is there anything else to look out for on these cars.

My brother in law ran Defenders for years, and would never consider anything else due to the amount of towing he does and the amount of off-roading he ends up doing.
Last year, he decided there were far too many things that were not good about the Defender and chopped it in for a Disco. He finds it just as good as the Defender for towing and off road ability.
Incidentally, when he picked up his last brand new Defender it broke down a few days later. Something about a lack of gearbox oil!
So, I can't help technically, but I would say unless you have your heart set on a Defender there are other, cheaper options.
Cheers,
DB

the early td5 defenders did have a clutch problem T /V reg where the clutch failed ,I know of 1 newer one which had a clutch problem but that was the slave cylinder .I have not heard of gearbox problems on td5 models.defender and disco units are basicaly the same unit, you could look on www.lro.com and see comments on the defender or disco forum ,you have to register to post questions.a big plus for problems with land rover is cheap parts and simple to work on,just stay away from the main dealer if you want to keep costs down
