A work colleague of mine has just bought a 1999 T reg Peugeot 306 1.9 Non-turbo Diesel. I understand that the engine in his isn't the 1905cc XUD engine i.e like the one in my 1994 L reg 306 and is the later 1868cc engine.
I have been wondering what the difference is between these two different engines other than a slight difference in size, could anyone please give me a bit of info as I'm interested to find out.
Thanks
Martin

There's a similar scheme in Leeds: www.whizzgo.co.uk/
It's sort of tempting, but (for me at least) on most occasions
I'd be better off with either a taxi, or a day's hire from an ordinary car hire company.
Test is here for whether you get taken in by the alligator smile:-)

Living in Spain, currently with my English registered, right hand drive P reg Peugot 405 diesel estate but now need 4 x 4. Preferably second hand X Trail or Rav 4. Very expensive here and understand as much as half the price if bought in Germany. Can anyone recommend a way of bringing a car to Spain from Germany and how I can sell my Peugot without driving it back to the UK??

We do have the odd expat based in your neck of the woods here in the backroom, as well as a few regular commuters to Deutschland. Hopefully one will be along in a mo.

Can anyone please tell me if there are any pitfalls with changing the cambelt & diesel pump belts. Haynes don't do a book on the 1998 diesels.
I have changed them on several other cars but do not know if I need any special tools or pins. Is the tensioner an eccentric? If so how do you relax it & retension it? Is there alignment holes in the pump gear to stop it turning?
Any help you can give would be most welcome.
Thank you, Vinnie Read more
You need a locking pin for the crank, but its not 10", more like 3-4" (from memory). You also need a bar to lock the cam (fits in a slot at the back of the cam) and a locking pin for the injection pump.
To be honest it is not a job I would be keen on, and I've done Subarus and Alfas.....
Hello Folks,
Yes three weeks have passed since my last posting, which means, there is something else going wrong under the bonnet of my 2001 Pug ,206 1.9 Diesel!
Last time someone tracked down a knocking noise coming from the pully as the dampner had worn down. Chugged the car to the dealer and £ 250 later new (cracked) tensioner pulley that needed to be replaced one week later.
Now I am driving along and I hear a tinking noise like someone has thrown sand onto my bonnet, no problem with the car so I think nothing of it. I look under the bonnet this morning and the alternator belt is all chewed up an slightly off the pulley on one side..Help!
Has it slipped off and went back again, had the belt shredded by itself on one side, have they not adjusted the pulleys right? I am taking the car in again tommorow hoping that in the mean time the belt does not fall off totally..can you help at all before the dealer spin me a tale, (is it their fault?) and I have to pay another £250...
Hope springs eternal
Craig

sorry forgot to mention that they did indeed change the belt..which
ties in with my question..
A question for Insect:- How do you maange to get the
oil filter out of the 1.9D, nightmare just can't get to
the thing to get enough leverage?
I had a similar problem with a old 2L primera my dad used to drive. When you do get the old one off by fair means our foul, before fitting the new filter wrap several turns of thick nobbly string around the filter and hold it in place with a layer of electrical insulating tape. This means that if you can get a hand to the filter you will have enough purchase to loosen the filter by hand, and therefor avoid the hastle of a chain whip. Mind you you will probably end up with a sleeve full off oil for your trouble :o)
Can someone please help, the drivers door lock is broken inside on our 1991 J reg Ford Escort Ghia, my husband cannot get to it as he cannot open the door to get the door panel off. Police have now threatened us that the driver of the vehicle must not crawl over to get out of passenger door - hence it's off the road which is causing huge problems as my husband starts work at 06.00 and has a 3/4 hour drive. Does anyone have any ideas please ? Read more
1. Don't get in/out of car when Police nearby. There are next to none on the roads, so it shouldn't be difficult.
2. Park very close to something on the driver's side, so it appears you are getting out on the wrong side because of how you've parked rather than because the door won't open.
Ok lads I'm about to join the masses of BMW owners - I've bought a second hand 330d and am picking it up on Saturday.
I've got the usual newbie questions and was hoping to find an online resource which can tell all. However looking around the web I can't seem to find anything. Also I've looked in HJ's directories but there's nothing useful in there. So does anyone have any links?
The thing I most want to know is that, as the car is 4 years old and has covered 107k miles, will it be in need of a timing chain change? The last service of the car was at 91k so the garage is going to do a (non-BMW) service on it but I just want to check what the status is with the chain - I've bought a car before (Passat) only for the timing belt to break within a month or so of ownership... That hurt financially...
Oh and whilst I'm here, on the test drive I checked the service records and they showed services at:
12k
26k
52k
61k
76k
91k
All BMW. I was a bit concerned at the jump from 26k to 52k, and also the fact that the car now has 107k on the clock and no service, but am taking comfort from the fact that it comes with a 1yr warranty and will be freshly serviced. Am I missing anything?!

Thought it would be intersting to hear everyone's views on what is the best and worst car chase they have seen in a film.
Best: Ronin - through the streets in Paris (I think) - both the actual camera work, the stunts and the length of the chase make this my favourite.
Worst: Fled (Laurence Fisbourne & Stephen Baldwin) - two guys on Ducati 916's not being able to outrun a big old cadillac or something similar - not exactly realistic.
So, let's hear yours.... Read more
Agree that Ronin probably has the daddy of all chases - and only one bit of CGI visible in any of them.
As far as San Francisco-based chases are concerned - I've always liked the on at the end of What's Up Doc. Better than the one in Bullitt IMO.
As far as the worst - the Mustang chase in Nic Cage's Gone In 60 Seconds. Oh deary, deary me.
Got stuck behind a lorry today travelling at a snails pace along a local road. Didn't appear to be doing anything but on closer inspection was dragging something along the road surface.
Any ideas what it might have been doing? Read more
It could be a device used for measuring road surface rugosity, or its lack! Skid resistance in other words.

The only other change I know of in the 306 XUD was to the turbo about 96N, when they started fitting 2-way cats. And in reply to Matt A, my 99T 306 is one of the first HDis (August) but letter T isn't listed in the price guides.
