Driving to work this morning a car lurched across the road at me at a relatively slow speed. As I braked hard, I noticed that the cause was the driver putting his seat belt on after the car was in motion.

It something I've often observed and I can't understand why people can't put their belt on before they set off. I assume it's just habit?? Read more

I always put mine on while waiting for the glow plug light to go out. Never drive without it. However, I've been using public transport so much recently that I have to remind myself to put it on when travelling as a passenger in a car.

I have a V reg 1.1 Saxo and seems to have a problem where it has temporary loss of power when accelerating or just cruising along in general. The car then starts to jolt and gets surges of power. The only way to stop it doing this is usually to change gear

Occasionally when slowing down the car has a tendency to stall, even though the car is still moving at a reasonable speed of around 30 mph and appears to have low revs, this is noticable when waiting at traffic lights etc as when no gas is applied the lights seem less bright, only to illuminate better once gas is applied.

Any ideas what could be wrong with it? The car has recently been serviced (this problem was happening prior to the service) Read more

ohh i asked the tune up guy how much it was, he guestimated about £100, but said spraying it up works most of the time as its normally a worn connection

Excuse me if someone has picked up on this already but I couldn't believe my eyes when I read it.
I've just got around to reading HJ's agony column in Saturday's Telegraph and he leads with some clown from Manchester who says he limits the use of the indicators in his Saab because he doesn't like the clicking noise they make.

Seems indicators must now be fitted as "optional extras" on many cars - hardly see them flashing anymore !!

Does anybody know how I'd reset the fuel cut-off switch after a sudden stop, please?

I know where the switch is (under the bonnet, between the battery and the ECU), it seems to have a rubber cover over it.

Do I need to prise this cover off or will this damage it?

Thanks.

From what I remember of a friends old Rover 200, the switch is very sensitive. His switch was somewhere behind the centre console, and he or a passenger only had to tap the side of the console with their foot for the switch to trigger and cut off the fuel.

I have a Peugeot 306 Estate on a W Plate. It has just run out of warranty and the air bag light is flashing is this anything to worry about and how do I stop it? Read more

I have cured this problem on my other half's Pug 306 T-reg estate in the following way: move passenger seat forward, lift up carpet under seat, find push-together connectors, pull them apart and re-connect. I believe some people solder them.

Had to do some work on the boot catch of my estate car at the weekend. Then I realised how much stuff I carried arround all the time - just in case. This list is from memory so I might have forgotten something.

Foot pump
2 socket sets - 1/2 and 1/4 inch drives
Small tool kit
Set of alum keys
Security screw bits and holder
Roof bars
Ratchet straps and ropes
Warning triangle
4 cardboard bottle carriers (for the next trip to France)
Car rug for picnics
4 large towels (used for stopping items rubbing or moving)
Screen wash concentrate
Deicer
Car polish
Interior plastic polish
Roll of kitchen paper
Set of spare light bulbs and fuses
Set of jump leads
Torch
Plastic fabric sheet (for dirty items or roadside repairs)
Umbrella

Thinking about it, I seem prepared for almost anything. Most of these items have been used recently and I would not dream of removing them.

Do you have essentials you always need to carry in your boot?

Hi,

Just had my MOT and as an advisory note, my front tyres are wearing unevenly - Outside edge 7mm, inside down to 3.5mm! Spoke to garage who do my other work, and they advised looks like a camber problem and needs specialist gear they don't have. Suggested I could swap front and rear wheels for short term solution.

Any suggestion on how much the camber adjustment should cost please? Am I looking at Main dealer prices?!? What would have caused it to be out by so much - car has signs of previous new front panels, so could accident damage have caused?

Thanks, Lesley Read more

Hi,

Thanks for replies.

It was the local idependent tyre garage that did the other MOT work, and having had a look, they advised camber was the problem, but don't have the gear to set it up.

As I have my re-test on Wednesday, with HI-Q Tyreservices, I'll ask them what they think.

Thanks again for replying, L

I forgot to say that in my four short years of owning and running cars, I have also had to take one garage to court (successfully, thanks to help from back roomers!) and threaten to take another to court in order to get anything like a decent level of service from them! There was yet another occasion where I would have taken a third garage to court but decided I didn't have enough evidence to continue. I am a reasonable guy and I accept that mistakes can happen, but it's the way a lot of garages deal with their mistakes that upsets me. Perhaps I am unlucky, or perhaps something seems to be done? It doesn't seem to be limited to main dealers either. I have had bad experiences with independents and fast-fit chains too.
