Can someone please help, the drivers door lock is broken inside on our 1991 J reg Ford Escort Ghia, my husband cannot get to it as he cannot open the door to get the door panel off. Police have now threatened us that the driver of the vehicle must not crawl over to get out of passenger door - hence it's off the road which is causing huge problems as my husband starts work at 06.00 and has a 3/4 hour drive. Does anyone have any ideas please ?

Would that be because of worn key-It wont operate lock?

Thx for that Steve but I don't think so, we think the wire inside has come off and needs to be put back on, hence why we need to get the door panel off. The key works ok.

Sorry what do you mean by "I dont think so" Common ford problem was worn keys.Ie lock wont operate even though key turns.It wont mean the lock is turning/operating as well. Have you a spare key to try?

Steve you probably think I sound totally thick, the key operates ok in the passenger door does this still mean it may not work in the drivers door ? Getting desperate.

Sounds like the only solution is to cut through the trim panel to fix the lock and then get another panel from the scrappy's.

What have the Police got to do with it? Why consult them?
Of course an unopenable door is technically an MOT failure, but who's going to know if you keep quiet about it?

We didn't tell the police, they saw my husband crawling over front seat to get out of passenger door !

AA or RAc will open open the door on a J plate no problem by liftinf the arm after gaining access down past the glass, even easeir with the window open. with a well positoned torch it is easy to see how to do this yourself. Regards Peter

If as Peter mentioned.The window will wind down. Pull outer window seal off the door this will give greater access to lock area.Hope that helps?

1. Don't get in/out of car when Police nearby. There are next to none on the roads, so it shouldn't be difficult.
2. Park very close to something on the driver's side, so it appears you are getting out on the wrong side because of how you've parked rather than because the door won't open.
