Know this might sound a stupid question but if a garage damages your car whilst its with them, am I within my rights to get them to do the necessary repairs free of charge?

Garage took my car last week for a repair which required the removal of the fuel tank. In doing so they spilt most of the fuel in my car. What happens when I get my car back and it still stinks of fuel or worst still the seats or something are damaged in some way. Can I refuse it until they have cleaned it up properly?

The petrol has to be pumped out of the tank..Not certain of newer cars. But an anti syphon plate/or similar. was fitted to filler pipe to prevent anyone Nicking your fuel..As draining off the tank is very slow using petrol feed to engine. Its faster to drain off removing sender unit.Large barrel tube on pump.wont take long to drain..This is why I suspect car full of fumes. Not raw petrol.Try removing any tank half full of petrol..Not easy??

My 306 '99 2.0 HDI Estate has for some time made a slight grinding noise when accelerating HARD! But about 1 week ago it's started to do it under normal acceleration. It appears to be coming from the nearside front. It doesn't seem to matter if you are turning or going in a straight line it still does it. It also does it if you are in second with the clutch fully open and you give it some welly.

Is it anything to do with transmission or possibly a CV? Any guidance or advice appreciated?

Thanks. Read more

This won't be of any interest to those who think car surveys are useless.

Consumer reports in the US has done their annual survey, the Hyundai Sonata has come out as the most reliable with 2 faults per 100 cars, the average faults for eastern brands is 12 per 100, US brands have 18 faults and European's have 21.

Its seems that the Germans are getting even worse at making reliable cars as the faults have gone up since last year.

Hi

I am a problem with my 306 and my friend seems to think it's the CV joint. When turning a corner I get a clunking sound what sounds like from the drivers side road wheel. Also I get the same clunking sound when going over a bump in the road.

Could anyone please confirm this or offer another suggestion as to what it could be?

Thanks. Read more

I had the sae problem with my Pug 306 that I owned some years ago. At the time the local Peugeot agent was very good and when I explained the problem the situation was resolved in approx 45 mins. It is a common 306 problem and it is a chassis support leg the bill was approx £30.00 from what I can recall this was about 6 7 yrs ago.
Any good Peugeot dealer woth his salt will easily recognise the fault hope this helps

After considerable dismantling to get to the offside headlight, 2002 model Passat , I found that the domed rubber cover was missing from the rear of the dipped beam bulb, allowing condensation to occur in the lens.
I dried out the headlamp with a hair dryer and made a temporary replacement cover.Hope it is now OK -but can these covers be bought separately?

But try putting it on 'home use' ramps without scratching the bottom of the bumper!

A neat trick is to place a brick immediately in front of each ramp. The tyre then mounts the brick and 'drops onto' the ramp a little further up - allowing you to avoid that point where the tyre is just about to mount the ramp and the bumper has already contacted the ramp further up.

It can be a dicey business driving it onto those home ramps. If my trolley jacked lifted high enough then I'd jack it up and put the ramp underneath the airborne wheel!

I?ve just taken over a 1996 Citroen AX (petrol) owned by my mother for the last 4 years. The car is OK but the steering is incredibly heavy. So far all I?ve done is to check the tyre preasures and note that there?s no uneven wear. Do these small light cars without power steering have heavy steering as normal? As far as I know it?s never had an accident.

Keep upright

I have an AX autograss car,and the steering on that is heavy, even tough the shell has been lightened for racing purposes.

And if you think your steering is heavy, try driving it with a welded diff.

W reg 626 During MOT main dealer reported front discs "corroded"
and pads 85% worn. This one year after purchase and full pre-sale
in depth check over, and 5000 miles.Car mileage is 47000 so worn discs I can understand- but corroded?. Any body like to comment
please.

The service would have been done before the Mot.And so if the pads/discs were ok.they would not have changed them...But this would also depend on the amount of wear already there. As long as they are within spec it will pass. But may not last as long as you would expect??

Forum De-badging

Could someone please explain what de-badging (or de-badging) is, and why anyone should do it?

It gets mentioned on various threads, but I seem to have moved in the wrong circles, because I've never come across it. Read more

There aren't many clues as to the engine in my de-badged 1999 1.0L vw polo. It has upgraded trim with rear head rests and metallic paint. The only thing may be alloy wheels not entirely sure the higher models all have them either. The steel wheels on mine started rusting so I now have vw trims on which make it look a lot smarter without the expense of alloys.

Mine is going for its first service tomorrow. Any idea as to what I can, reasonably, expect to be charged? What does a first service consist of for the diesel version? Read more

Probably not.
First major failure 7 years from new - if the car
had been serviced at an independent the amount saved would
have been more than £400.
Doubt whether the manifold job would have been costed at £400
at an independent either.

Well the failure happened twice. And yes, perhaps the cost might have been less, but then again maybe not - I don't know about you though but I never end up saving money :P It always seems to get spent and I end up paying the same. The point was that yes Main Dealer Servicing is expensive - soemtimes rediculously so - but it does have fallbacks.

Will grotty suspension bushes cause an MOT failure in themselves, or does there have to be excess free play? Read more

Metal-rubber separation is usual reason for failure.
