For the last 5 years my Mondeo 1.8TD water temp gauge has sat spot on the N of Normal. But for the last 2 weeks it's sat off the N and at times just off the end of the cold shading, especially if it's being driven on part or light throttle. However if it gets booted for a while then the gauge comes back to where it's been expected. It uses no water, warms up as expected and i get good heat out of the heater, however continued use of the heater can cause the temp indicator to drop.

It had a anti freeze change last year with the cam belt, i,m thinking about changing the engine temp sender as the stat appears to be working correctly. Anyone else had a similair problem before i whip the sender out or is it just a winter tthing that i've never noticed before? Read more

Colleague at work has a 51 plate A class. She said it broke down at the weekend (initial diagnosis alternator, later revised to battery, which was replaced). Today she managed to lower 3 of the windows which then would not go back up again. We managed to lift the windows (hand on either side of the glass and depressing the up switch) and get them to stay up: is there some sort of re-set process that should have been followed after installation of new battery? I did suggest she RTFM as well, but she's not very technical....

I emailed it to her... ! she has little confidence. I have to say, tho', in her shoes, I'd probably also wait until I came back from holiday. If it doesn't work, and you end up with all 4 windows at the bottom of their travel and a plane to catch, it could be inconvenient!

Hello there

I was wondering if anybody could offer advice on the following.

I have a chip tuned W Reg 1.7 DTI Astra with the 16v Isuzu engine and it has developed an apparent misfire or hesitation at approximately 2600rpm.

Unfortunately this equates to 70 mph in top gear and right at cruising speed on my motorway journeys although I can recreate the fault at the same revs but in a lower gear. Its only apparent on holding the car at that speed only and does not appear during acceleration up to, through or beyond that rev range. It almost feels like the car is running out of fuel for a better phrase, but as soon as you accelerate or drop below 2600rpm its gone.

I've checked for airleaks and reseated sensors that I can see and now I've reached the limit of my ability (!!). I really hope its not the chip tune as I've had that nearly 4 months and it hasn't been occuring for that long....

Not a lot to go on I'm afraid, but I would welcome any pointers all the same. Thanks in advance.....

I've convinced myself that the heating system on my 2002 model diesel Passat must have some kind of auxiliary heater as standard.
When setting off from stone cold in freezing conditions, with the airflow diverted manually to the fascia vents ,I get warm air within one minute. Not so noticeable when set on Automatic as most of the air goes into the footwell and windscreen.
Do VWs indeed have some special feature?

some of the diesels have glow plugs in the hoses to the heater matrix, which kick in when its v cold outside.

the cambelt on my 1.6 156 went last week.

The dealer has quoted £2592.85 to rectify the problem.

The car has done 45000 miles and the belt was inspected (but not changed) at 36000.

I belive Alfa instructions are to replace at 36000 miles (delaer says advice is inspect and only replace if necessary).

Does anyone have (or know of) an official Alfa document number or id that proves this one way or the other.

Am I right to expect Alfa or the deale rto meet a good proportion of the cost above (car is 3.5 years old).

bit of a long first post so thanks for bearing with me.

cheers. Read more

Before you do anything try a solicitor's letter first.

We used to reject claims out of warranty on auto parts but if the customer's solicitor wrote in detailing why there was a case and threatening legal action, we paid " without prejudice".

In our case the sums involved were in the sub £250 range so paying was cheaper than any courst action including Small Claims. Our legal fees in that started at £250 before we went to court.. and could easily run to £000s.

So well worth trying...

My friend had a near enough similar fault on his 206 1.4 GLX. The dealer relaced coil pack under warranty. It would be better to source parts yourself e.g. GSF or Eurocar parts and get a garage to fit it for you. Alternatively you could find a local Peugeot Express Fit if you want a Peugeot garage to do it for you. They tend to look after 3+ cars and charge less than the main garage rates.

Only of use if you live in the Preston area. I have just been to Tesco Leyland and they are selling off Carplan Triplewax car wax 500ml bottles for 79p (88p for the metallic/pearl version) and the 350g tins of Carplan Triplewax car polish for 55p ! Thought it might be of interest to anyone in the area.

Question short journeys
Joe 90

Hi all,

Is there any way I can minimise the damage done to the engine when taking short trips, two or three times a year I drive down to the south of France, Spain etc however the rest of the time I only make short trips and the engine rarely reaches the optimal operating temperture?

Had the back box fitted 3 months ago and its driving me mad. Don't know whether its knocking on the actual floor of the car or the rear axle, but its getting worse. Everytime we have a back box fitted to either of our Corsa's we go through this for weeks until it is sorted.

Is it a simple DIY fix? Fed up of going back & forwards to the garage.

Also, if you go for a non-standard exhaust, do they still have a triangular back box?
