On my way to work and approaching a traffic light junction, with lights on red. I?m only car in LH lane to turn left, queue of cars in RH lane for straight ahead and right. Just as I come alongside cars to my right, an emergency vehicle appears in my mirror, approaching us fast, but we are blocking its route.

I have a good view, can see the junction is clear, and can quite safely drive through the red light, and clear the emergency vehicles route.

Alternative is to obey the red light, but the emergency vehicle is then trapped behind me.

What would you do?

The Corsa was probably a hire car. That's why I never buy 'nearly new'.

Hello backroomers,

Sorry, I'm a long-time lurker in the backroom, and rather selfishly I thought I'd drop in query in case anyone has any ideas.

So I own a very old MX-5, and used to own an Elise which was supposed to have replaced it. In the end, I couldn't bear to part with the MX-5 and kept scaring myself with the Elise, so the Elise went. Now, the idea l replacement has come along . . . the new MX-5! So, I phone up my local Mazda dealer and asked if I could pre-order one (or possibly the launch special edition). Said Mazda dealer said "phone back in a couple of months, we're not taking orders yet." Now, I can imagine phoning back in a couple of months and being greeted by "join the 6 month waiting list." Any ideas about the best way to go about ordering one and getting reasonably high up in the queue (if there is one)?

Cheerio!!! DPM

PS Of course, I'm still tempted by another Elise . . . . Read more

I'm possible looking to replace my MX-5 (2.5) with one. I heard from my dealer that they won't take orders until November and don't expect to see it till 2006.

Best of luck, as for me, I'm going to wait a bit for the other people to resolve the inevitable teething issues.

Travelling from Leeds area via M62 West to Manchester Airport around 11AM weekday.

When I get to the M60 Manchester ring road, is it best to go clockwise or anti-clockwise?
Maps show the distance involved to be about the same.

Hi - how long should I need to drive my car after jump starting it so as to recharge the battery? The reason I ask is that I did so for about 25 mins last night but battery was still flat when I went to restart this morning. Not sure if it's relevant but car is a Jag XJS and battery had been fine up until recent cold weather.

Cheers,

I would be inclined to check both battery and alternator..if Alternator not charging properly. Battery isnt going to get enough charge. No matter how long you run engine

To distinguish them from the humble 4x4 class of cars, shouldn't two-wheel drive cars be classed as 4x2's? (Or should it be 2x4's? Which comes first ~ the number of wheels or the number that are driven?)

Hi everyone. Good to have joined - hope it will be fruitful!!

I am off to auction tomorrow having been to 4 before but never bought and now ready to buy!.

Anyway, there seems to be a few cars on Auctionview that say there is no logbook with the car.

Is this a big issue or can i buy one and just get a new v5 from dvla?

Any help/advice greatly appreciated. Read more

Ex-Moderator

Well it depends what you're doing with the car.

Clearly the first issue is that you can't tax it until you get the new V5.

Fairly easy job.You need to remove top & bottom steering column shrouds, then 2 small screws hold switch onto plastic plate & release 2 multiplug connectors. The only problem might be is that you will need torx multispline drivers to remove the screws.

Was thinking of servicing my high mileage diesel car and was thinking of using engine flush.
any one got experience of it? is it good or bad?
does it really work? Read more

nortones2

Its possible this was the intake: they have been known to get clogged up, possibly when engine is run on unsuitable oils, by deposits from the EGR. It'll take more than a flush to get rid: more like a decoke of old! See the references to Freds that I think have been given before, and check what you saw with your mechanic before taking it any further. Don't waste money on "miracle" cures.

Today's Daily Telegraph has an advertisement for the latest "Fuel Saving Breakthrough". www.savingpetrol.com/home.asp

£98 and there are 5 errors of spelling, syntax and grammar in the text plus a few more on the website. One wonders why a firm, apparently on the cutting edge of combustion technology can't pay someone to check their English! Doesn't give me a nice warm feeling about the product, particularly when the name of the man who did the research plus the University where he works at doesn't produce one answer when tried in "Google" Read more

Even better is to write to the Advertising Standards Agency:

Reading through some of the Adjudication findings on advertisements placed by some very famous names is always highly enlightening...:-)
