I saw a Skoda Octavia Estate police car in Derby yesterday. It is the first I have seen, I think.

Does anyone else know of other constabularies that are using Skodas now? Read more

I normally spend about £2k and look for anything that looks like it might last a couple of years. Currently driving a 200k Xantia I've had for nearly 4 years. I did once buy an A6 2.5TDI (140) - a league ahead of the Xantia, but I bent it.

What are peoples thoughts on the following, all with about 100k?

1997/98 C Class
1997 E Class
00/01 Octavia
00/01 406
99? Passatt
00/01 C5

Not too worried about resale values as I'd intend to have the car for a few years. Should I go for youth or pedigree? Should I be down the Auction? Read more

Hi All,

If a car is purchased on a HP agreement,

Am I'm the registered owner and keeper for insurance purposes?

If I'm not does it push the cost up? Read more

I'll contact the insurance peoples for an quote.

Not that anyone else likes Fiats, but I'm looking forward to collecting my Stilo JTD.

I've received (in the post) an invitation from Citroen to take a test drive. Apparently, if I accept the invitation, I'll get £15 worth of M&S vouchers. Seems like a good offer to me! I take it other Citroen owners are all getting the same? (And do other manufacturers make this sort of offer?)

Bearing in mind that I have no intention of buying a new car any time soon, which Citroen should I take for a spin? Read more

I think it was the last car to bear the Triumph name: it was more reliable than some as it was essentially a Honda.

They had trouble selling them in Germany as the German for Triumph Acclaim is Sieg Heil....

Badger

I'm contemplating selling the Badgermobile privately, probably on ebay. Not yet fully decided, but one matter that bothers me is insurance for test drives. I feel it quite unreasonable to expect anyone to buy a car without first driving it -- a ride as a passenger conveys little -- but I want the car fully insured for this.

While a prospective purchaser would normally be able to drive my car on his own insurance (if he had any) it would be the minimum RTA cover only.

What is the best way of overcoming this, please? Read more

Thanks, Retro. I've done a fair mileage on ebay and am aware of the need for a scrupulously straight description. Non-paying bidders aare a fact of life, I'm afraid, but are they more prevalent on Motors than elsewhere? Probably likely, because it seems to me that the rough end of the motor trade (and they'll be on ebay like wasps round a jamjar) has more than its fair share of crooks.

islandren

Renault Espace, 1992, 2000cc, petrol injection, 76K miles.

Help!
Engine will start fine when cold, if after 3 or so miles when warm I stop and turn off engine, come back to start it, it will start and stall unless I am quick with the throtle and keep it going.
The only way I can get it to start is leave it for 30 mins to go cold, or just keep cranking it over on the starter. After about 30 seconds it will start but will be very rough for about half a mile.
One other clue may be if the throttle is bliped the engine speed will drop down to almost stall speed and back up to 1000 revs?
It's not petrol, or petrol filter, or spark plugs.
Anyone had the same problem and got a solution?

Renew Coolant temperature sensor and renew the earth connections from battery to engine and chassis. Flywheel sensors have been known to give the starting problem but they usually run sweetly the instant they restart.

Our 2002 30,000 mile just serviced tdci requires 2 attempts to start below about 5 degrees C. It stalls quite easily too. Ford garage says these are tdci characteristics! The glowplug light does not seem to stay on long enough, 3 secs, our tddi stays on at least 5. Anybody else have these problems?

gfo - have you asked your Ford agent about putting the latest version of the ECU software on your TDCI? They won't always do this by default during a service, but provided your car is within warranty they should do this for free. Members of the Ford Focus Owners Club (www.ffoc.co.uk) have reported stalling problems and it would seem that Ford have responded by making changes to the software over time to rectify the stalling problem.

My TDCI starts first time every time, and will hardly ever stall. I made a point of getting the latest software update during my last service in May.

Hello everyone, i am having some trouble with my Mercedes. The choke cable has come off the carb, but i dont know where it goes back onto. The carb is a Stromberg 175CD (i think thats the number), and is on a 1972 mercedes 220 (the stacked headlight model). If anybody can help it would be much appreciated. Read more

Whilst they are mainly SU experts you could try asking Burlen Fuel Service www.burlen.co.uk/ as they are pretty good with all carbs and may know.

BerlingoMan

Berlingo diesel 1.9, 2002, with 30k on the clock (Non HDi).

Driving home tonight, sudden loss of power and a knocking sound from the drivers side of the engine (Near the top).

Car starts OK (ish) and will run but continues to knock runs rough and has low power.

All sorts of horrible things went through my mind from a disintegrating cam belt to broken pistons or cam shafts!

As the knocking isn't regular it seems that maybe it isn't the failure of a major mechanical part.

The recovery driver seemed to think that it was almost certainly a broken fuel injector.

Is this likely? If not, what else could it be?
