£5k Diesel to do 30k/Year - Simon Collier
I normally spend about £2k and look for anything that looks like it might last a couple of years. Currently driving a 200k Xantia I've had for nearly 4 years. I did once buy an A6 2.5TDI (140) - a league ahead of the Xantia, but I bent it.

What are peoples thoughts on the following, all with about 100k?

1997/98 C Class
1997 E Class
00/01 Octavia
00/01 406
99? Passatt
00/01 C5

Not too worried about resale values as I'd intend to have the car for a few years. Should I go for youth or pedigree? Should I be down the Auction?

I can only comment on the C Class, I'm on my second and touch wood have had only I nasty bill in 5 years. They go on and on with no complaints and no breakdowns, I just change the oil and check the pads and every year have done anything my man in the know says.

My initial thoughts on this are that you are asking for quite a lot, 30K in any car is a fair amount. In a car 100K miles up, who knows. At this mileage condition and previous ownership count for more than any perceived reputation.

Youth or pedigree? That's up to you, I always go for youth as the badge on the bonnet is irrelevent to me but for others it's a factor.

I would be tempted by a late 406 HDi or the Octavia.

I'm not too bothered about 'the badge on the bonnet' I've had enough Pugs, Citroens, Renaults, Vauxhalls etc. I won't spend a vast amount on a car because of the miles (too much depreciation) - I'm concerned with not being on the hard shoulder...

Pity 'you've had enough pugs', 'cos you need a well speced 406 2.0 Hdi!!

Get one from the Peugeot direct fleet, in auction & you'll be 1/2 way into a well maintained car!!

With lots miles left in it!

I'd buy the newest I could find with a nice high mileage, with the proviso it has a full and comprehensive service history. The high mileage would make it relatively cheap and less likely to have been clocked. Not very old so the mileage is almost certainly motorway miles (watch out for an ex-taxi) thus running the diesel engine in nicely.
From your list the Octavia would appeal to me the most.

Agree 100% with nick's comments. Octavias manage 300k even with taxi abuse so you know they are good for mega mileages as there are 10s of thousands of them across Europe.

I'd go for a recent Octavia or Passat
