People consistently ask; The approach is based upon what I believe to be reasonable.

Negative feedback can usually be split into two areas;

1) Accusation of dishonesty

You may not identify someone you are accusing of dishonesty or a dishonest act. And, by the way, the following would all identify Tesco and would be uacceptable;

The supermarket with advert x.
The supermarket with a name which rhymes with Fresco.
Tesc0 or T3sco.
etc.

An accusation of a dishonest act would be "I paid for two but they only did one", "This company is a rip-off" and other similar comments.

You may know that what you say is absolutely true; I do not know this. Neither am I prepared to put the amount of time, money and effort into the level of investigation which would be required for me to know that you were being truthful.

You may know that they have lost a court case over it - usually I do not know this.

Therefore, I am always working on the basis that I do not know that what you say is true, and will assume that it may not be.

If what you say is not true, then this represents a serious issue for the website. It may be that a case can be won, or indeed that it can be deflected to you rather than ourselves, however either will take time and money even when completely in the right, never mind if in the wrong, and so it is not a risk that we will take.

Even if what you say is true, it will still cost money, time and effort to prove/justify/explain that it is true, and I'm not willing to do that either.

If you wish to give a negative message about a vendor, I find that the following phrase works well enough; "I would not recommend supplier X and will happily supply more details by e-mail".

2) Opinion of Product/Service

You may say that you do not like something. You may even say that you think it is rubbish - my views on the Freelander would be an example. You may say that you find it awful or that you would never buy it. On the whole opinions that are clearly that, opinions, are usually acceptable.

That is not to say that I will not remove the more extreme opinions; again I will err on the side of safety.

Finally, to sum up, anything that I feel will cause the website difficulties or extra work, or even something which I think might do so, will get removed. Generally I follow the principles I've stated above, but if I have a doubt I always err on the side of caution.

I hope that makes it clearer. You may comment if you wish. We'll discuss it a bit and I'll take note of any valid comments. Then it will all get deleted and this will remain.

the only places with free speech in this country are parliament and speakers corner in Hyde park

otherwise you are always open to liable and defamation, incitement, etc charges

Now if the server was owned by an off shore company, in a dodgy third world nation, and the servers were also similarly sited, and anyone who posted spoofed their IP address, then you would be close to a site for free speech, whether you would like it or not is another question

A friend bought a 51 plate Almera 1.6 with aircon and 34k on the clock last week. I suspect he paid over the odds for it. I'd be interested to know whether he did so because of some reason known only to himself, or whether all the cars at this particular showroom are over the odds.

To avoid any flavour of bias, I won't yet reveal what he paid, or where the car was from. Could you let me know what he ought to have paid? This is purely for my interest, and for me to know that I am right (!) - I shan't be letting him know, as he is happy with the car so far.

Thanks,

Any help on this is greatly appreciated ..... It's winter and i have no heating.

I have a Renault Laguna RT 1995(N). Approximately 30 seconds after turning the ignition on, my climate control displays 'service'. The air conditioning does't work, nor do the fans.

Thinking it was due an air con service, I contacted a Renault dealer and explained the fault. The dealer suggested that it probably wasn't an air con service but something else.

I have checked my (well used) Haynes manual but it fails to provide any useful information, apart from 'consult your Renault dealer etc ....'.

Has anyone any ideas please?

Does anyone have any tips on removing the air grille at the bottom of the Ka windscreen to get access to the heater air intake. There's something flapping about when the fan is on and I'd like to remove it. I can see the screws securing the grill inside the engine compartment but there are a number of plastic clips above the bonnet line. These look as though they might break if forced. Read more

Thanks for info. Problem solved.

In the car-by-car breakdown, HJ is pretty sparing with the cars that he is prepared to recommend (let alone highly recommend). I got to thinking about this recently as I am looking into buying a previous shape Honda Accord. It is very difficult to find much adverse comment about these (save that they are a little bland..)and perhaps like the Primera, they seem to tick almost all the boxes. HJ is positive about it, but it doesn't rate a recommended tag.

HJ highly rates the Mondeo, but I am such a huge fan of Japanese reliability (my current Nissan and two previous Mitsubishis were almost faultless)that I am tempted by the Honda. It is also perhaps more likely to have been looked after well and driven sensibly ( a more mature person's car?)

Any views anyone?

It is a very nice car, but I have known bodywork repair costs to be very silly money.

With Mrs V's test looming and her theory to a good standard we though it best to try out the Hazard Perception Test. For those of you who don't know it's comprised of 14 video clips of assorted road scenes. 13 of the clips contain 1 developing hazard and the other contains 2. You need to click on the button when you identify a hazard which could result in you having to slow or change direction. Throughout each clip there are any number of minor potential hazards which might cause you to do this or where you'd be right to see at least the potential for danger and you can indicate these but what they're really looking for are the major hazards. You need to click to register the major hazard during a particular time slot in order to gain marks. IIRC the pass mark is 40/75. Easy eh? Well not so. It appears possible to register a hazard too early, think you've done all that's required but come away with a big fat zero! It seems that in this situation too much anticipation is just as bad as none and that can't be right can it? For example I clicked when I saw road works signs immediately ahead but didn't click again when I reached the actual location just a short distance ahead. For this I got 0. The dilemma is that if you click to early you get 0 but if you click again and it's deemed too late (even though you've aleady recognized the hazard) it's assumed that you haven't acted in sufficient time.

Also, the software has a habit of assuming cheating if you click too regularly and awarding 'nil points' too. This happened to both of us even though we weren't trying to cheat! Of course there needs to be a method of preventing people just clicking repeatedly but I can't help thinking this isn't very effective.

All in all though it's a good test and worth trying (if you dare). There are some problems which need to be better adressed however. It's true that the test software we're using isn't exactly the same as that used officially but is supposed to be a very close match. Read more

Well I think we need both the computer based HPT (which could be better) and the 'real thing'.

Adksi - sorry about the pint, I'm e.mailing it as an attachment now via DD et al. If it doesn't arrive one of them will have had it :)

BTW had a bit of real life hazard awareness experience this morning. Like so many things it arose out of almost nothing. I'm proceeding down the main road and a guy in a Hyundai Coupe emerges slowly from a side turning as I approach. I brake slightly, he eases off and as I proceed ahead he follows along what is now a one way road. Next thing I know, white van man has roared up behind us both at high speed, overtaken the Hyundai on the left, cut in front of him and then attempted to pass me on the right despite having no room to do so. Hyundai man of course gives loud blast on the horn and WVM responds by slamming on the brakes. What follows is a stupid and senseless cat and mouse game of 'see if you can get past me then pal' on my right followed by the inevitable face to face confrontation and wrestling match! Fortunately I was turning left just ahead and managed to stay out of their way. Pathetic really.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum, so apologies for any mistakes.

I've owned a 99 Ghia Focus for 5 months, and I've had no real problems. This weekend however, I've noticed a quiet but noticable squeak from the steering wheel whenever I turn it about 5 degrees from straight. Its somewhat intermittent but when it squeaks its very irritating, I was wondering if the attachment screw for the steering wheel was loose? Its definitely not occurred before and its becoming more noticable, is there a washer that needs replacing?

I've taken it to Ford this morning to have it checked out, but I'm half expecting them to say its 'normal' - but it definitely isn't. Any ideas?

Thanks

Aaron

So I've got about £11k burning a hole in my pocket, am hoping to buy an ex-fleet diesel automatic car (audi a4 / passat / volvo s60 or equivalent).

I've been reading the auction news for a few months now and figure I'm ready to have a go myself. Question is - will I get more for my money now or after christmas?

Cheers

Good memory! In Gloucestershire, according to the BBC website:

"The coldest night of the 20th century was Wednesday Jan 13 1982."

I remember it as I was in Sheffield walking 2 miles home from an evening job that night. I was wearing T Shirt, jumper and donkey jacket (None of your fancy fleeces back then) and it *was* a bit fresh. Then again, in Sheffield it was only -18.

PS On thread, hope it is cheap now, as I've got Joe Dowd looking for a car for me at the moment. He did make the point that the slump in prices now means fleets hold their stock a bit longer, so finding a vehicle is a bit tougher.
