December 2004
I bought a Peugeot 306 LX HDI Estate (registered in April 2000) in March 2003 and, after a few months, it developed a loud
whistle that is coming from the fuel filter.
The whistling only starts several seconds after starting the engine. It sometimes stops whistling, but is mostly continuous.
I have recently replaced both the fuel filter housing and fuel filter, but the whistling still occurs with the replacement items.
I thought it may be caused by air in the filter housing, but I cannot find a way of bleeding it. I cannot find any "priming bulb" or bleed screws on my model. Therefore, I presume it is self priming and self bleeding.
(The only Haynes manual I could find for the Peugeot 306 only goes up to 1999 models, and mine is a 2000 model, which does not appear to be covered)
Does anyone know:
a) what is causing the whistle ?
b) is it necessary to bleed the fuel system on this model ?
b) how to bleed the fuel system on this model ?

DD.
A work colleague has just had his Mitsubishi Outlander serviced and asked for my comments on the service sheet and invoice. What would you have said?
First Service, 9000miles, car 8 months old, Petrol/Gas fuels.
1, Service sheet is not ticked off in section for oil and filter change.
2. Total bill, £240.00. This includes, Air refresher assembly, £28.00, Castrol Oil £30.00, Labour £100.00, Petrol Treatment £10.00, Engine Flush £10.00, Brake de-dust £3.00, Superlube £4.00, Oil filter and drain plug gasket £7.00. Service kit and environment £7.00.
3. Tyre report states that spare is new. There is no spare, gas tank fills this space.
4. Interior bulb replaced, 10w on invoice, handbook says should be 8w.
5. Bill also includes £2.00 for screenwash, but it was full when he took the car in.
6. The service check list is dated 1996 to August 2001. The Outlander was not introduced until January this year.
I would be interested in your comments.
P.S. I have rounded all the items on the invoice to the nearest pound. Read more
Surprised they used engine flush on a new engine too!
Question time, chaps and chapesses.
It's time to dispose of my Passat 20V, and I'm looking to replace it with a turbo-diesel of some sort.
Option 1 is my Dad's 99V Passat 110 TDi, which he's willing to let me have for £4.5k. Done under 40k, know its history etc.
Option 2 is something else that carries a family of four, is as good on economy, mechanically bullet-proof, and costs £4.5k.
So, two questions I'd appreciate some informed answers for.
1) Does anyone know the longer-term reliability record of these pre-PD VW turbo-diesels and whether there's anything in particular to look out for (i.e., those surprise big bills)
2) Suggestions for an alternative, meeting spec detailed in Option 2. Don't really want a car that's been to the moon and back.
Thanks for any responses. Read more
On the cambelt subject, next time go to a SEAT dealer. Just had it done on my Passat 110TDI, (and including water pump) for £219. SEAT are part of the VW group, and use VW bits, and technicians are well trained.
Read on the news a few days ago that this lot were going to stage a protest on the M25 today (Friday 17th). Maybe they took one look at the jams and decided a protest would not make things much worse! Read more
Thommo,
I for one totally agree with you and the F4J campaign. My brother found out last year( by phone) whilst he was in the Gulf that his now ex wife had found someone else. He now has to go through hoops to see his kids and why, cause she wanted someone else ( whom she now no longer is with)
Divorced fathers now get shafted by their ex wifes, lawyers and the courts whom seem to bendover backwards to the wives whims and decree that Fathers have no rights.
How many times do we hear about Dads not having their children when they are supposed to because "little johnny's" got a cold etc.
IMHO the best way ahead, is to get the ex wives back in front of the judge to answer for her decision's to not allow the father to see his children when they agreed to it in the divorce agreement.
can anyone help me with this prob? the blower on my xantia has packed up. it blows very slightly then stops all together! was working fine last week..checked fuse, wires, etc but no luck..its getting cold out there now so has anyone got a clue what it could be??

Had a SAAB motor keep blowing fuses. Solution was to get the motor out (not easy) and dismantle it carefully, clean everything up and get it greased to spin freely. No problems after. Clean up the bushes and all the electical contacts as well with alcohol or meths.
Are Mobil still doing the track record?. The reason I ask is because the cans used to carry a verification number but since the design was changed the number has disappeared. Also theres no mention of the track record anywhere on the packaging. Read more
Hi,
I had a new power steering pump fitted to my Astra about a month ago. Before the old pump failed, the steering was really quiet, but since the new one was fitted there is a terrible whine when on full lock. I used to drive new company cars for my previous employer and always noticed they also had noisy steering, but was pleased when I bought my Astra that it seemed so quiet. Should the new pump be noisy? Will it bed in and quieten down or should I go back to garage and get them to check it? I don't do great miles, only local school run etc, so its not had much use yet.
Thanks, L Read more
Sounds like it the pump pressure relief valve, I would just take it back and get them to check it.
I can't give too much detail on this but would be grateful for any opinions/facts.
If a car such as a Mondeo strikes an immoveable solid object such as a high kerb, what kind of speed would that vehicle have to be travelling at to cause one of the airbags to inflate?
Also, once inflated, what would be a reasonable cost to have the airbag replaced/repacked/whatever it is that has to be done?
Any help gratefully received!

Brings us back to a query that was discussed on airbags many months ago. Will they actually deploy without the ignition on? I think the general consensus was that they wouldn't??
I have seen at first hand several cars which were mangled by someone running into their fronts whilst they were parked up and all the airbags were intact.
Visited the Rover (or what ever they were called that week) factory in the early eighties to see the production line etc.
I remember they had a yard full of impossible cars such as estate Montego Turbos or Maestros vans with Vanden Plas leather interior, estate Maestros etc.
Basically, if it started down the production line it got built as the parts arrived, even if it was not going to be sold/daft spec.
I have often wondered, did any of these cars survive and is this an example of BL/Rover etc being daft or does this happen at all manufacturers? Read more
there is a nice Burberry bikini in which I am sure you would look stunning!
It wouldn't work, Phil. Ever since I climbed into that bathful of bleach when they were doing my hair, I'm the wrong colour for that bikini
Kev,
You do not have to bleed the fuel system on the HDI engines.Fuel is supplied to the filter by a low pressure in tank pump(about 3 bar) and the system is entirely self bleeding.Failure of the in tank pump is extremely common and your whistling noise at the filter may be an indication that your tank pump is failing.
