Rovers "impossible" cars - Retro
Visited the Rover (or what ever they were called that week) factory in the early eighties to see the production line etc.

I remember they had a yard full of impossible cars such as estate Montego Turbos or Maestros vans with Vanden Plas leather interior, estate Maestros etc.

Basically, if it started down the production line it got built as the parts arrived, even if it was not going to be sold/daft spec.

I have often wondered, did any of these cars survive and is this an example of BL/Rover etc being daft or does this happen at all manufacturers?

I would have thought most early/mid eighties Rover group cars have gone up to that wreckers yard in the sky by now, unable to run on unleaded being the main nail in the coffin.

on most car production lines the pressure is on to keep the line moving except in the most dire circumstances

so a leading luxury car brand often come off the end of the line with the wrong emission engine because the only engines available to the people on the line were different emissions

a leading family car brand keep getting produced when the booth that does the underseal breaks down

lower grade than normal tyres used when supplys run out of correct type

i think you will find this is all car companies

I heard of two stories that backed each other up about the factory that produced the Mk 2 Astras.

One rolled off the production line in the mid 80s with a 1 passenger door on one side and 2 on the other side. So from one side it looked like the 3 door hatch and the other side it looked like the 5 door. This was found on final inspection and pulled for reduce to produce. Up until then everything had been fitted to it.

A few years later I was working at a Vauxhall dealership in Leicester and recounted this story. I was told that another one like this was actually delivered on the transporter!

Having worked in manufacturing, (both automotive and aerospace), My guess is that these errors of production will be used by the manufacturers as company/site vehicles, research and general messing about in. Rarely will they see be retailed directly to the public.

another leading brand specialised at one point in one colour tinted glass on one side, and another colour tint on the other, and these did make it to customers (i know a mate paid for one)
sorted by dealers after sale

I reckon that's what happened with those VW Golfs from a few years ago with the different coloured panels. Too expensive to put right, they banked on finding enough people with no taste to palm them of on as fashion chic...

I saw one of those the other day (Polo, not Golf). The rather twee effect sat poorly with an enormous chav-style exhaust!

I think the VW colour scheme is Harlequin.

Maybe there should be a new Chav one - Burberry...

I'm sure not many years ago there was a shortage of leather interiors for Mondeo Ghia X's so they fitted cloth seats and took of the 'X' decal and sold them as Ghia's with free options fitted (or something like that)

Possession of that thing ought be an arrestable offence!

It is an arrestable offence under S25 Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and s136 Mental Health Act*

*This is merely a power of detention but long enough for the authorities to scrap the thing under an Offensive Weapon amnesty.

Quite pleasing on the eye, in my opinion.
With a set of alloys it would look fantastic!

NW,
Look at the link again - there is a nice Burberry bikini in which I am sure you would look stunning! And what a nice couple you and Tom would make with his baseball cap - the Posh and Becks of the Backroom!!

It wouldn't work, Phil. Ever since I climbed into that bathful of bleach when they were doing my hair, I'm the wrong colour for that bikini
