Interesting article in today's Mail regarding the police and how they have behaved in certain unrelated incidents. One story relates how a guy fired a water pistol through an open window of a passing police van, whereby annoyed officer get's out sprays the dangerouse felon with cs gas and gives him a foulmouthed, er mouthful. All witnessed by Joe Public apparently.

Which brings me neatly to my point. Going to work on Wednesday at 4:40a.m. on the M60, travelling along at 80mph I was hauled over. I was over the limit so I am not going to defend myself. What I was not prepared for was the tirade of expletives the nice officer spouted forth. He goes on about how I was wasting his time as he had had to leave an area that was being watched as thieves were targeting Mondeo's - the very car I was in co-incidentally - and one could very well be being stolen as he spoke and it was my fault. All this was accompanied by plenty of effing and jeffing. The talking to culminates in several threats, i.e. I know where you live (obvious really, with access to the DVLA database), I will take your licence off you (How?) and plenty more swearing.

Now, I suppose I should be grateful, as he could very well have given me a ticket but his behaviour really struck a nerve. Obviously a charm school element is not part of the police training but I am sure if I had responded with similar language, I would have been cuffed and stuffed in to a van before I could say boo to a goose.

Now several of you will say stick to the limit and you will not fall foul of the law. But surely they have certain standards of behaviour they should apply when dealing with the public? After all they are under enough pressure as it is without alienating the public in general.

Or am I missing the point completely?

After a year of joy free motoring my ford fiesta L reg has just been diagnosed with terminal rust at it's MOT. I am thinking of either scraping it, or trying to sell it for parts. I have been warned that people buying a car for £50 may not register it correctly, and that I might be liable for fines incured by them. What is the best way of disposing of this car?
Also, has anyone had a good experience with any hatchback under £1000? If so, what?
Thanks for everyone's help in delaying the death of my car,

seen e-bay spiel like this before, still it grabs attention and sells items. Wifes and girlfriends who allegedly damage these cars don't seem to make a very good job do they?

I realise this is opening the wounds again, but I found this article quite interesting--by all means freeze the thread, but I reckon it's worth reading. Apparently many large SUVs are already banned on certain streets in California, but nobody has noticed:

slate.msn.com/id/2104755/?GT1=4529

Citing Microsoft--what am I thinking?

Anyway the gist of it is that many California streets have a 6000 pound (3 ton) weight limit to prevent trucks using them as a cut-through. Many SUVs, including the Porsche Cayenne and the Toyota Landcruiser and the BMW X5 are outside that (or could be when laden). I wonder if this applies to any roads in Britain? Read more

Things are different over there though, we've been to california on fly drive holidays several times now and every time hired a big 4x4 to check out those dirt roads in the desert,
even small roads over there are like HUGE roads over here, parking lots ave massive spaces and its just normal to have a huge gas guzzler, i wouldnt fancy driving about in a nissan micra over there, that is if you can even buy a car that small!!!

Also really big trucks are cheap over there, if I lived there id have one for sure but i lice here so im getting a mini!

Epsom man in car smash ? as he chases his Mercedes

The victim of a daring car theft risked injury as he leapt into his wife\'s car and chased after the thieves who snatched his £70,000 sports car.

But as he tried to box in the stolen Mercedes SL55 the thieves crashed into the pursuing car, leaving both vehicles badly damaged .

The incident started in the evening on Thursday, August 5, when the car was snatched from under the victim\'s nose.

The man, who was selling his silver sports car, had arranged a viewing. Two men came to his home in Epsom before leaving.

At about 8pm the victim received a call on his mobile phone from one of the men and as he was speaking, saw his Mercedes being reversed out of the drive by the other man.

The car made off and the victim saw a blue Volkswagen Golf being driven erratically by the second thief.

The victim leapt into his wife\'s car, a black Saab estate, and chased his stolen Mercedes along College Road.

As it drew up at traffic lights at the junction with Longdown Lane North he tried to box it in, but the thief drove straight at the Saab, pushing it out of the way and causing major damage to both vehicles.

The stolen car then made off down College Road.

It then turned right at the roundabout in the direction of Burgh Heath and has not been seen since.

This week police appealed for witnesses who saw the theft, the collision at the crossroads or who saw the Golf being driven erratically.

The first offender who arranged the viewing and was driving the Golf was of Asian appearance, 6ft, of slim build, with dark hair and long, thin sideburns.

He was wearing a white linen shortsleeved shirt with a scribble sign, faded blue jeans with white horizontal marks and rings on his fingers, including a thumb ring.

The second man, who drove the Mercedes, was also of Asian appearance, 5ft 10in, plump, with a paisley tattoo on the right side of his head partially covered by a number two haircut and was wearing a dark blue t-shirt with a zipped front and dark jeans.

Anyone witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact investigating officer PC Alex Paul at Epsom police station on 0845 125 2222.

Im about to sell my car in a few weeks and read up on the "how to buy and sell" section, there are a couple of very good tips on there, while theres not much you can do if the guy turns up and steals it, but a few of the tips may prevent a "car jacking".

It scares the hell out of me that there are people around who would steal from under your nose, we really do live in a country full of scum and this thread was a stark warning to me not to trust anyone! Before I trusted both people who bought my cars (the first lady was about 75 though) and was lucky but not anymore, I wouldnt show anyone the car without my dad or boyfriend there.

I really hope the police catch these people and lock them up indefinatly.

Hi, I have a damaged base to an OE beesting aerial. I have bought a non-OE replacement, which has different co-axial fittings! I've since been told that the VW base unit has a built in amplifier and without it the Sony Radio wont work properly. I've been quoted £65 by my local VW agent for a replacement! Has anyone any experience of fitting non OE aerials as replacements, Do they work properly ? and what about the adaptors to fit the replacement aerial to the VW jack plug ?
Any advice appreciated. Thank you

my 93 cavalier has a very pronounced vibraton which comes from the rear at speeds around 60-70. If I go faster the vibration disappears.

My father seems to think that the tyres may need to be re-balanced (it just went through an MOT with no mention of worn suspension bushes etc).

Any ideas if out of balance wheels could cause this type of vibration ?

Yes, Cavalier's are very sensitive to out of balance rear wheels. However, check you haven't got a tyre gone "out of round". Jack up and support one side. Release handbrake and spin the wheel. Looking from the rear of the car, observe that the tyre spins uniformly and there's no deviation in the tread pattern. Repeat with the other wheel.

Nice to see that with all recent talk of oil production problems, the Chinese economy draining our reserves faster than predicted, and ultimately, and end to it all, we're being nice and sensible with what we use it for.

To quote the paragraph in particular that amazed me:

Bottled Water (for pets)
No parched pooch should be without it, according to inventor Bill Fels. Launched last year in the United States - which, unsurprisingly leads the world in the pet pampering stakes - Petrefresh is a bottled water specially formulated for dogs, cats, rabbits, gerbils, iguanas, pot-bellied pigs and even fish. Sold in regular two-litre bottles for $2.29 (£1.25) each, the mountain-spring water is processed using ultraviolet light and ozone, but unlike human bottled water is not "sediment filtered". Rhonda Stoner, who markets the product, says it's "not a luxury item"

Of course this water won't come in oil derived plastic bottles, or be transported in oil burning vehicles, will it?!

What a shameful waste of resources, and I don't care it it is a free market for anyone to exploit. I still don't like abuse of that privilege. Read more

THe Growler

......but you see 100cc isn\'t any fun, makes you look like a prat as well, whereas a big hairy-bottomed motorbike will stop the adrenalin from congealing and turning you into a PC eco-drone just as the greenies would like to see. I.e. everybody living in huts made out of recyclable straw, rubbing 2 pieces of wood together to start fires, riding donkeys to work and wearing dead animals. Having passed manadtory government courses in tree-hugging and how use spinning wheels, not mention that awful word \"parenting\".

As for pets I personally don\'t care for them, although I do have some tropical love-birds (of the feathered variety let me say at once), but remember that for old people ( sorry can\'t say that, for \"seniors\") and people living alone (sorry can\'t say that either, \"singles\") a pet can provide affectionate company and a relationship of sorts. I believe there are cases where keeping pets has helped people who are sick as well.

As for giving them special water in plastic bottles that\'s just probably another example of some marketing pimples\' meeting after an overly indulgent Friday lunch. What a lot of BS.
