When I look at the current new crop of small cars with sliding doors, I wonder what would happen in the event of a side impact. I wonder if it would be as easy to escape in the event of an accident. I like the idea of these doors but am I not sure. What do you think?

I read in a newspaper today about no implementation of parking restrictions (double yellows and all)in St Albans, Herts.

Apparently cars parked all over the place: bus stops, taxi ranks, footpaths

Sounds like heaven.

Is it true? Read more

Strange one this,my niece sat indoors(well inside a caravan actually)hears a big crack or noise which makes her and her b/friend jump.On going outside they see nothing that may have caused the noise. On leaving for home they discover the windscreen is cracked in the tax disc area.Seem to be no kids close by and in any case the car is quite secluded where it's parked on a very quiet caravan site.My question is could the loud bang be an implosion or explosion of the windscreen on it's own?Anybody any experience of this happening? Similar thing happened to me with a toughened screen. On a motorway at about 70 when a stone or something hit the screen, loud bang but no apparent damage. Half an hour later I was in town waiting at some traffic lights when there was an even louder bang and the screen shattered into a million bits. In those days toughened screens had a small non shattering 'safety zone' in front of the drivers eyes, that cracked as well. I used the recommended 'punch a hole in the screen ' routine and ended up with all of the million bits inside the car, but a nice clear view.

Anyone any experience of removing pine tree resin from the bodywork on my car? Three distinctly sticky blotches (or should I say "splodges"...)on roof and bonnet resulting from a recent camping trip to Landes region of SW France.
Any help much appreciated.

I agree that CV joints are usually the most likely culprits when there is a clicking, but have you checked the tension of the handbrake cables? If over tightened they can cause the brakes to bind on hard lock. The handbrake cable guides (wire loops) tend to snap leaving the cables to flap around. Check also that calipers are well clear of everything and discs are not warped.

Are you sure it's not the suspension pump clicking? It would be working harder when power steering is hard over.

Drop links wear on Xantias. It's unlikely these are causing a clicking - usually a 'rattly knock' on poor surfaces. Check anyway.

I don't suppose there is an outside chance the tyres are hitting the mudflaps? My Mum's Clio had an odd rhythmic click going downhills on left lock. After much binding in the marsh I took off the flap and it disappeared! Plastic wheelarch liners can come loose and produce the same effect!

Have you tried jacking up both sides of the car and turning the wheels?

Is it coming through the steering? Might be a problem in the rack.

Good luck!

My scenics developed a knock, I think is coming from the front end, it only occurs when I'm accelerating round a corner, it happens turning either left or right, driving in a straight line is no problem. I have just come back from France having covered 1800 miles, the noise was there as we get to France but has not got worse during that time, the car is 1998 model & has done just under 60'000 miles, any ideas please. CV joints are not part of MOT.
Correct me if wrong?

www.motuk.co.uk/manual_250.htm

Hi.

When lifting off pedal to decelerate revs do not drop immediately, almost like being on a cruise control for a few moments. More noticible when lifting off from higher speeds.
A local mechanic says it could be a faulty Exhaust gas recirculation valve. (expensive to replace he assures me)He says that it can be disconnected and blocked off with no ill effect and it could cure problem. Surely all these 'Bits' are there for a purpose.

Any ideas appreciated

Many thanks Read more

Some Fords had the gas strut on thee pump to stop the throttle snapping shut when you took your foot off the accelerator but it was done away with on later models and could be removed with no problems on earlier ones.
