I have a 95 xantia 1.8 sxi 8v i have owned it for 3 years and all this time i have had a clicking noise on full lock when going either left or right coming from the passenger side it has been mot'd and serviced and every time i have been told by the garages that the cars fine its really buggin me and i want to resolve it.
I have covered over 30k with this problem and never broken down today i took off a tie on the CV boot and put some grease in it as for some reason it wasnt very tight can anyone tell me what it is i begrudge looking for a new car as this car has done well and i have spent time servicing it or does anyone know of any good techinical sights so with pdf format manuals that i can buy.

The cause is either lack of constant velocity joint lubricant, perhaps due to a damaged gaiter, or a worn outer constant velocity joint.
I would take it up with the garage that has serviced it and point out that you have mentioned this clicking noise on several occasions and that they stated it was fine.
Re technical manuals, you should be able to pick up a Haynes manual quite cheaply at a boot fair or secondhand bookshop; alternatively enquire at your local library to see if they have a copy.
My own library service carries a vast choice of Haynes manuals.

Did you use proper CV joint grease, or just general run of the mill stuff?
|
It was the proper stuff i used one satchet was that enough or to much.
|
Depends on how big the satchet was.
Better get a manual...:-)

I agree that CV joints are usually the most likely culprits when there is a clicking, but have you checked the tension of the handbrake cables? If over tightened they can cause the brakes to bind on hard lock. The handbrake cable guides (wire loops) tend to snap leaving the cables to flap around. Check also that calipers are well clear of everything and discs are not warped.
Are you sure it's not the suspension pump clicking? It would be working harder when power steering is hard over.
Drop links wear on Xantias. It's unlikely these are causing a clicking - usually a 'rattly knock' on poor surfaces. Check anyway.
I don't suppose there is an outside chance the tyres are hitting the mudflaps? My Mum's Clio had an odd rhythmic click going downhills on left lock. After much binding in the marsh I took off the flap and it disappeared! Plastic wheelarch liners can come loose and produce the same effect!
Have you tried jacking up both sides of the car and turning the wheels?
Is it coming through the steering? Might be a problem in the rack.
Good luck!
Graeme
