Hi, I am in the process of buying a used A3 (1.8 T, 2001) from approved Audi dealer. When doing the check around the car, I noticed there was condensation on the inside of the clear plastic sheet part that covers the headlights. This was only on the right hand light, the other one was fine. The guy at the dealer said this was normal as the car hadn\'t been used for a while and that it would go away after normal use. (He also said that if there was any probs to take it back under the 12 mth warranty. ) Is he right or should I be worried about this condensation? I thought it would be watertight around there. Also, do you reckon this will be covered under warranty??

Well the time is FINALLY here and the Beetle is up for sale and the Mini is coming on the 4th sept.
I rang my insurance company, Eagle star who have just been taken over by Zurich. They cannot insure me on the Mini so I am forced to take my business else where ie. Direct line.
The insurance is not up for renewal until November, in November i will get 4 years NCD but if i move insurance companies they will only give me three years NCD.
Direct line quoted me for three and four years NCD and the differnce is £200!!! Is there anyway at all I can get round
this?? can i leave the beetle insured until november and keep the policy running on two cars?? then in november cancel and re-open the policy with DL??? help please!!!

have you tried "diamond" insurance for a quote?
I need to send a letter to VW in UK. Anyone know the Customer Services Department address. A failure of the Turbo inlet duct on my 2 yr old Passat TDI PD caused quite a problem for me. Thanks, Redser Read more
Red,
you've probably seen this already....

But it's very useful for getting a working knowledge of the various legal issues involved and your rights under them.
The "Notes for Traders" is the best all-in-one read. Remember it's the retailer you have the Contract with - not Volkswagen itself - I'd save yourself some time and go straight to/for them.
I'm after a relatively low cost car (approx £8000-£9000) to cover 35000miles per year in. I'm opting out of a company car scheme in my next job. At the moment I drive an 04 reg Mondeo 2.0 (128bhp) Diesel with the 6-speed box.
Now, having had a browse around and look at a couple of cars I can get my hands on, for example, a 2002 02 reg Golf GT TDI 130 for £9000 with between 80 & 90,000 on the clock with fully stamped VW service history (generally one dealer doing all the servicing)
My question is this - is this a wise move, or should I be looking at something with lower mileage. I realise there will be costs for replacement of certain parts, what should I reasonably expect to have to replace on a car of this mileage/age?
Thanks in anticipation of your answers..... Read more
Most companies won't cover it because of the provisional driver on a Group 13 (at least) car. Eagle Star/Zurich wouldn't, whilst the company insurance brokers wanted £2,700 for the same. Even the high performance companies walked away when I said provisional driver! If it had just been me it would have been about £750...
Still, I'm sure she will pass fairly quickly!
Sorry for this post - but I\'ve lost yours/Gordons e mail!

My Rangie runs on LPG and petrol. Does anyone know if at MOT time the emissions are tested with the engine running on petrol or gas? If gas, can I get away with fitting an exhaust pipe minus the cats? I intend to fit tubular headers with lambda fittings. As the probes are upstream of the cats the ECU will not know whether they are fitted or not. Read more
Thanks for that Aprilia. As you know about these things, will it fail on gas if the cats are not fitted? One of my cats is rattling and can only be replaced as a pair with the 'Y Piece', so I thought about a nice set of tubular headers. The new cats are the best part of £900! Ouch!
Just by chance I got to drive a 120d Sport today (apparently a day earlier than permitted by BMW). THey look much better in the flesh than on paper - still not a pretty car. I think it will be like the 5 series which does grow on you. However the 163 bhp TD even with only 35 miles on the clock is absolute stunner - it seems to pull in every gear between 20 and 90 ! I was talking myself into a 320cd coupe but with the pricing and performance on the 120 I am probably going to order one as my next company car - the reduction in monthly cost to me will be substantial. BM's are meant to be big cars. Look at the 316. Looked like it had been rear ended. I have no idea how well they sold but I can't imagine they shifted more than....3. Keep BMW's nice powerful and everyone will be happy.
Look at the 7 series! Can't go wrong with one of them!

Although I get on great with the 200 TDi I am tempted by the Disco TD5.
I have decided to avoid the 300TDi, A number of owners I know complain about reliability and repair costs etc, one especially having returned his to the dealer in disgust after £1200 of repair bills in one year. Personally I think I have been very lucky with a very good 200 TDi.
I know the Series 3 is coming out in October and the local LR dealership promises to call me when he gets the TD5 trade ins, but their prices are not cheap.
I am looking for a good well specced ES around year 2000 and sensible mileage. Where is the best place?
And can those of you in the know give me some indicator as to how I could convince a main dealer to clear out a TD5 (of which he may have plenty to shift) at a price comparable with private sale or even auction (I know... I don't want much but I have done this before with a car that was in the dealership for too long).
Thanks

I know that the local Land Rover Dealer are expecting a
deluge of TD5s when the new Series 3 is available, and
expect to have to discount them for a bit.
That's good to hear, the Disco is one of my options for replacing my current Saab in the New Year. I keep being tempted by tales of getting 200bhp by strapping on a huge intercooler and turning the boost upto 11. :-)
Well Just been home for a few days after returning from Scotland last Sunday.
Trip up was fairly uneventful, except for that yellow card moment when the disco refused to stop in the wet approaching a roundabout. Nevermind, the would be "victim" got out the way quickly enough and just some tyre tracks in the opposite verge were all that was left to tell the tale, so if you live near Market Drayton and see some nice tyre tracks on a verge on a mini roundabout....
After settling in to the cottage that was lent to us in Meagle, near Perth, we looked at certain pursuits.
One such pursuit was some quality 4x4 training at the Land Rover Experience Centre at Dunkeld. £150 paid for 3 hours training from a Land Rover trained and qualified instructer in a Defender TD5. My 9 yr old daughter accompanied us in the back seat. Apparently she enjoyed it very much!
After a 20 minuit talk and half an hour with the instructer taking the vehicle through its paces, it was finally my turn.
Well, words can hardly describe the fun I had! Not to mention how much I learned. Unfortunately, due to the rather heavy rainfall, the 'pond' was out of bounds that day. The Defender would have probably got lost under the water. However, there were several other smaller ponds to try out.
The first exercise was a Hill climb. Low ratio, diff lock and second gear to get the momentum. We were told "Go as slow as possible but as fast as necessary". That was not a problem, although the deliberate "failed climb" later did present a challenge. Una, the instructor, told me to stall the vehicle, but do NOT use the clutch! Then put it into reverse and start it IN reverse, again not using the clutch! So turning the key actually made the vehicle start to roll back. All these things you learn when you drive - half of them don't count when you drive off road. The first time I did the failed climb, yes - i stuck my foot on the clutch, much to the amusement of Una, and my daughter, who was watching in the back. I had to do it again, properly!
The descents were great fun. First gear Low ratio diff lock, go to the edge of the hill and take the vehicle over the edge, but the secret here is to let the vehicle do the work. With the engine on tickover I just kept my foot off the accelerator and brake (and clutch!) and simply steered. WOW!!!!
After getting used to the vehicle on these slopes we then went to the small dips etc. This little area consists of some small creaters, tracks, ponds and a 45° road. Driving the vehicle with the axles at 45° did take a bit of getting used to but I enjoyed it. I also had a go at straddling rut, which meant that the vehicle had to be kept level.
In addition to this We drove in the woods over several lanes flanked by trees, stumps and rocks in various dodgy places. I did take one or two corners a bit fast but Una did not seem unpeterbed. She seemed happy that I could handle the vehicle at the speed I was driving, besides sometimes you need to get the speed up so you don't get stuck.
Some smaller ponds were tackled. It was first down the hill and into the pond and as the front axles levelled out, into second and accelerate out and up the ascent the other side. The larger dips in the woods were tackled in exactly the same way.
The best moment for me was driving through a flooded creator. The TD5 Defender has the air intake on the RHS so this had to be kept out of the water. Within reason, the whole of the LHS wing was game for total submersion.
Second to that was probably driving down a really stoney descent. Although the vehicle did the work for you, just requiring you to steer it, it was partly sliding on the stones! As I got towards the bottom it was more or less just sliding rather than engine braking. With the bank on the other side I knew it couldn't go far, besides I had a gear change to worry about.
After Una and we said our goodbyes, I went to pick up my wife and other daughter, who is not a natural off roader, from Dunkeld town centre, only to find everyone wading through the town centre!
That was what it was like on the way back. On the way there we had seen a very amusing spectacle when a Merc C class came around the corner at 40 and was stopped in his tracks by 10" of water! When we left that flood, after having driven through carefully the water was above his door sills!
On the way back we encountered several floods and the off road driving instruction came in very handy. Try to create a bow wave to keep the water away from the front of the vehicle, The top of the wheels (not tyres) is the maximum for the water depth etc. That is why we were not held up, though occasionally we did have to negotiate around cars waiting at the floods.
Driving past the Merc C class flood, we saw aforementioned Merc C class parked in a layby, possibly with an engine full of water.
When we got back to the cottage safely, I promised that I would NEVER be without a Land Rover!
Now to find the Devon and Cornwall Land Rover club...

That puddle has a pothole in it that puts the engine under water. Ouch.
Not really. Both my air intake and coil are higher than the engine. It's a Landrover not a Bavarian Murder weapon.
Am looking to buy a small run around and after looking around think that a 2000 onwards Corsa 1.2 may be a good balance of reliability and running costs. Seems that it has a Suzuki engine with timing chain rather than belt. I have searched around for any problems to look out for, but there do not seem to be any major faults reported on these models - seems too good to be true for a Vauxhall!!
Any information good or bad would be appreciated before I go ahead and buy one. Alternative I am consdering is Fabia but appears that they are in short supply used, mainly from Main dealers looking for over the top prices.

JS, You are probably right about the carb, I didn't probe the thing, just cast my eyes over it. I don't know how many valves either (hangs head in shame)!.
Since you have posted this in both Technical Matters and Discussion I am locking this one.
Later today any replies posted here will be transferred across to the other thread. {Done. DD}
