Is it me or are there not really any good car mags anymore?!
Autocar has turned into one big BMW advert.
CAR is full of lovely pictures - lots of waffle though.
Auto Express is just an info source with no real journalism and rates the power of cars in the 'european' way of rating power! gimme it in BHP!
EVO used to be my favourite, but now i'm seriously thinking of cancelling my subscription. Apart from the Ford GT40 buying guide they seemed to have stopped the buyers guide which was great, all they do is review caterhams, track cars and supercars. Where have all the fun hatches, Q cars and affordable performance cars gone? Also all the usual writers have been moved to other duties which doesnt seem to be working well.
The only one left worth getting is Classic Car if only for the adverts - Car porn at its best! Read more
Glossy & expensive, they're even offering 12 months for price of 9!

Having read number67's post on a low mileage no service history car and the subsequent responses, it got me thinking about this thought that a high mileage car is better than a low mileage car.
Now i dont know if i'm in the minority on here but as long as a car is regularly serviced i would generally always rather have the low mileage car.
The interior, the tyres, the brakes and generally most wear and tyre items (bar the exhaust/cat) usually seem to be in far better nick on a low mileage car. Which means less immediate expense.

I agree with MM, but don't always do what I preach. I know it is sensible to buy a modern high mileage car for the obvious reasons stated above, but last November bought a CR-V which was 2.5 years old and had only 3,800 miles. It wasn't properly run in. But now it has done a further 6,500 miles, and has had several motorway trips, it is running smoother and is more economical..
The car was absolutely immaculate, just as when it came off the line and we probably paid a little over the odds for it. But compared to other examples of the model of a similar age, it is is far better cosmetic condition (both internally and externally) as well as now being in proper mechanical order.
Several years ago we bought a Honda Accord with 72,000 in three years - that lasted until 109,000miles and four years when we sold it to a minicab driver for good money (only item of repair was a new radiator) and also a BMW 730 which was five years old and had 93,000miles. Kept that until 109,000miles with no repairs and sold it to a BMW specialst dealer who offered good money for it.
The trick is to find a sought after car, buy it with a high but properly documented mileage, keep it fully serviced and you will probably do OK.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
A friend is looking at a car which is nearly 3 years old. The car has done just 6.5k miles and has never been serviced. The car and seller seem genuine (over phone and looking at e-mails). But the fact it has no history bothers me a bit - should it?
There's no warranty on it as it was an import bought from motorpoint. I guess if we paid for a check to be done then they wouldn't be able to verify the mileage as its never been serviced or mot'd?? Would that be correct? Read more
number67 -
first, presumably your friend is happy with his choice of make & model?
if so, just to the left of this thread, you will see an ad for "usedcarchecks". that comes with a warranty.
ask your friend to check it out.
if usedcarchecks find the car is ok, and if your friend thinks the price is right, tell him to base his decision on those two factors.
I have four 307 in my fleet, one is due it's 48k service. The Peugeot garage have informed the driver that a fuel additive is required plus a ceramic particulate filter needs to be replaced at a cost of around five hundred pounds. The supplying dealer's sevice manager "thinks" that the parts are issued f.o.c.by Peugeot, the servicing garage disputes this.
Any thoughts or comments.Car is 52 reg.(Oct) Read more
Just checked this a few days ago with my dealer. £680 (inc VAT parts and labour) for the filter and the noxious liquid. Now (June 2005) there is such a shortage, of either the filters or the noxious fluid or both, that Peugeots are coming off the line without the stuff fitted and are thus not Euro 4 compliant, although they will have to be by 1/10/05. If I am still running my car when this becomes due I shall ask to have the non particulate exhaust fitted ie the one they are fitting now. It isn't worth paying £700 at 72,000 miles to save a few £s a year on your road fund IMHO!
I was fortunate enough or unfortunate enough to drive 3 off E Series TD MB from 1999 on. All from new.
First dropped oil on my drive from new. It also had the habit of going into \"Safety Mode\" at odd times. This meant you had to drive home at 20 mph. No fault ever found.
Second was a 2000 E320CDI which spent 6 weeks out of the first 12 in the workshop. Cruise Control not working intermittently. ABS Fail Lamps. etc etc etc. MB UK were patronising. Garage advised me to pull over (on the motorway ) whenever the ABS fail lamp illuminated. \"Switch off the ignition, restart the car and if the alarm has gone then it\'s a false alarm\"
After 3 sets of steering wheel stalks, 2 replacement Control Units, 3 brake light switches etc etc etc I was handed the car and asked to \"see how I get on\" \"Have you fixed it?\" I ask. \"No\" is the answer. I kept their courtesy car and told the dealership that I would return it when they provided a solution.
15 minutes later the MD is on the phone to me and we are talking at last. I comment that my 2 letters to him had gone unanswered. He will call the police if necessary he tells me. My response is that I will have the local press available when they arrive.
Common sense prevails. MB UK and the dealership agree to replace my car. It arrives 3 months Later. I take it in for first service and comment that there seems to be a problem with the demisters. They take the dash out and discover that the dashboard demist tubes have never been connected from new.
That\'s why I was making enquiries of Autobytel about a Volve V70.

My friend's brother has just bought a 1yr old, 10,000 mile top of the range Vel Satis (£30.000 new) for £14,000. Bringing it to show me tomorrow. You can't go wrong at that price can you. Read more
I would love one of these to replace the S80 thats going tomorrow. However, I lost £5,700 in 20 months on the Volvo, so don't fancy doing that again. Maybe buy a five year old one in three years time.

Glad to report our new leather vests (goatskin) for Growlette and me have arrived from Bangkok and my Ace Cafe patches have been duly stitched on along with my riding group's colours. My pals were chuffed with the Ace patches, T-shirts and pins I brought back.
Good to see the Ace reborn, I think it should be a National Heritage site......
Last night on the History Channel they did a Mods and Rockers thing and the old Caff got plenty of exposure. Certainly I remember c.1960 sticking 6d in the jukebox and tearing down and back before the record ended (if we were lucky). The Bonnies had it on the straights but those Tritons were king at the end of the day.
Brings back the memories of a packet of Players Weights, a cod and nine and a pickled onion.....
Thanks to HJ for suggesting the venue and thanks to our BR-ers who found the time to pitch up. Really I enjoyed myself.

Ah, you spotted the deliberate mistake to see if anyone reads my posts....
I recently hit my Mondeo Diesel TDDi 2001 Model into a drain and broke my driveshaft. While waiting for a new driveshaft replacement, the mechanic has just replaced the broken bearings to the old driveshaft that was hit. Now, I am driving temporarily with the old driveshaft and at 110-140 kpmh, my steering wheel shakes a little. I have brought my mondeo for wheel alignment and balancing but to no avail. Is it due to the driveshaft that I suspect?

If you have hit something hard enough to break a cv joint then almost certainly the suspension will be damaged. Stop using the car until properly inspected and repaired in case one of the suspension components is actually broken or you have a part sheared bolt for example.

The mini is coming with Zenon headlights and also comes with headlight washer jets. I asked my boyfriend and he said all cars with Zenon lights have to have headlight washer as well.
Why is this??? Read more
Xenon lights have a sharp cut off so they're not as great on country roads esp on unlit roads at high speeds.
Exactly the same symptoms as my daughters T Reg 1.6.
