I realise this is opening the wounds again, but I found this article quite interesting--by all means freeze the thread, but I reckon it's worth reading. Apparently many large SUVs are already banned on certain streets in California, but nobody has noticed:

Citing Microsoft--what am I thinking?

Anyway the gist of it is that many California streets have a 6000 pound (3 ton) weight limit to prevent trucks using them as a cut-through. Many SUVs, including the Porsche Cayenne and the Toyota Landcruiser and the BMW X5 are outside that (or could be when laden). I wonder if this applies to any roads in Britain?

Good posting - well spotted!

It would be nice to think that there were some roads in Britain with similar weight limits. Come to think of it, I'm sure there are some small bridges with low weight limits...

And how many drivers know their vehicle weight laden or otherwise. Had to check the Xantia.

Someone at msn can't count. Escalade I can believe, but Porsche Cayenne S, they served as example, weights only 2,23 tons and heaviest in range - Cayenne Turbo is 2,36 tons. The heaviest 4.2 litre LandCruiser Amazon TD weights 2660 kg. You would still need 4 supersized fat Americans to exceed 3 ton limit...

>Someone at msn can't count...

Remember they are using imperial tons (not tonnes) and "short" tons at that (2000lbs not 2240lbs). Converting kgs to lbs at a rate of 2.2lbs=1kg, and assuming you quoted the unladen weight, the Landcruiser Amazon TD weighs in at 5852lbs. In other words, one slim adult male on board would push it over the limit.

Things are different over there though, we've been to california on fly drive holidays several times now and every time hired a big 4x4 to check out those dirt roads in the desert,
even small roads over there are like HUGE roads over here, parking lots ave massive spaces and its just normal to have a huge gas guzzler, i wouldnt fancy driving about in a nissan micra over there, that is if you can even buy a car that small!!!

Also really big trucks are cheap over there, if I lived there id have one for sure but i lice here so im getting a mini!
