The rear brakes on my 406 do not seem to be working properly - the inner faces of each disk show signs of corrosion which would suggest that only the outer pads are in contact with the disks when braking. I do remember (but dismissed at the time!) that for a while there was be a mild snap as I pulled away first thing in the morning - sounded like it came from the rear, poss the brakes binding when stood overnight?
I will be looking at them later today - any advice would be most appreciated.
Thanks, Adrian

I know you can discover online if a postcode area is already broadband enabled, but what I would like to know is whether there is somewhere which can tell me when an area may become enabled in the future (rough date). I'm relocating, and although I can see where broadband/adsl is available, I don't want to dismiss a village which may be about to go live in the near future.
Thanks,

Do you know who sent it to you? Ask them what application they used to produce the file.
I reckon it was something Macintosh related

Just approaching 38K ,C5. Nobbut a youngster.
The radiator cooling fan only cuts in for a short time when required.
The problem is that occassionally, it makes a vibrating noise (as if a bearing has run dry), during part of the time it is on for cooling.
Anyone else had this problem?

Oh the good old days. WOW you have got a 1600E.
Must come round and steal those Rostyle wheels or collect the spare wheel from 4 parked 1600Es. That way the owners usually have not a clue when the theft took place.
I loved the car and Wow did it perform well!!
I have just been looking up the road tests on the 1600E.
With 88 BHP variously 11.8, 11.7, 12.4 0-60 mph time
Max speed 95, 96.3, 97 MPH
The spec said 13.1 and 98MPH and 25.1 MPG
Motor said ...only a moderate thirst for petrol. Our overall MPG 23.1 being pretty fair.
The car came with an optional servo and optional seat belts
Basic cost £799 which became £1020 19s 11d .
This included purchase tax and delivery but not Safety Belts
How things all round have improved and advanced in 35 years (except for complexity.)

My P6 has Kangol seatbelts.
Now Kangol is a 'designer' brand of clothing.
In 35 years somethings haven't changed for the better.
Hi, i have an annoying problem on my golf tdi. When i apply the foot brake when slowing down comming up to traffic lights for example the engine will begin idling strangely. Then when i take my foot off the brake it will stop and idle as normal when im waiting for the lights to turn green. Could this have something to do with ABS for example a sensor.
This is the only instances when it occurs. It does not occur when braking down from great speeds.
Any help is appreciated. Read more

A 21-year-old Bradford man whose car sound system caused shop windows to vibrate and stationary vehicles' alarms to be activated has had his car seized by police.
Over the last few months evidence has come to light about a black Honda Civic being driven around Bradford City Centre with excessively loud music blaring from it.

Seems the ACLU is getting very powerful over there in the USA, will be even worse if you guys vote in Lurch.
SWMBO and I have a disagreement.
Part of out property, an old shop front in serious disrepair, fronts straight onto the road puplic highway, where two of our neigbours park their cars. Parts of the frontage could possibly fall onto neighbours' vehicles.
To make necessary repairs could take a while, and we are planning to remove the shop front and convert this part of the property to residential accomodation, so we were planning to leave alone at the moment, as it is at least watertight.
My suggestion is to place a clear warning in the window to the effect that persons park at their own risk bearing in mind the poor state of the building. SWMBO doesn't think this would work at exempting us from liability. Who is right?
I am quite happy to make temporary repairs, removing any immediately dangerous hazards and making safe. My neigbours seem amicable enough, but their insurers may not be and other people that park there may not be.
Any advice please.
Thanks

OK that's that settled.
One nil to SWMBO!
Memo to myself:
1 - Fix or make safe potential hazard
2 - Don't let the wife see this thread!
Thanks for all your responses - all of which make sense really, it's not the first time I've been wrong and I'm sure it won't be the last.

PS, Martin - why didn't you let me know you were coming, I would have put the kettle on! I live about 4 miles from Kelly Bray. Have you got a job on there?

What a mistake that was! Just 5 points on F1, followed by 2 points on general knowledge.

well, it would be a bit boring around here if we all agreed on everything.

MINI adventure in progress
talking to my mate recently about the number of Mark 2 Golfs that are still on the road.
Can't say the same for these relatively old but not ancient models: -
Fiat Stradas (hand built by Robots)
Fiat 127s (car of the year 1977 ish)
Fiat Mirafioris (superb 2.0 twin cam)
Yugo Samaras (with a Fiat Tipo engine)
Alfasuds (?)
Co-incidentally a mustard Austin Maxi went past my house last night. Don't see too many of them about now. Can't recall the last time that I saw and Austin 1100 (or 1300E!). Also saw a Cortina 1600 E yesterday. Makes me go all tingly!

I once swapped a motor bike for one of these (well, a Wolseley Hornet actually, similar mini-with-a-boot mutant). It had a rotten rear sub-frame and hydrolastic suspension. My brother swapped the sub-frame for me for one from a scrapper, changed the hydrolastic units for rubber lumps and "trumpets" (the alternative dry suspension) and off I went.
After a week or so I asked bro why it pitched and rolled like a ship in a gale. He said it probably had to do with having no dampers, damping being integral to hydrolastic but requiring separate units on the dry cars. I asked if he could fit some, and he said "not really, because there's not much worm-free tin to attach them to". 4 cross ply remoulds would last 600 miles!
The next MOT finished it off, or would have had it been entered. Happy days. And this was a seven year old car that had all but rotted completely away - tell me cars aren't better built now!
As to the prices of brake parts, they cost about a quarter or less of the price that the Main Dealers charge. IMHO anyone who goes into a Main Dealer (unless the car is in warranty) needs his sanity questioned as going there is a bit like having "Mug Me" tattooed on ones forehead.
As to the poor rear handbrake, on this model the brake is NOT self adjusting. One has to jack up the car after removing the wheel then faff about with a screwdriver trying to adjust the adjuster. X-ray eyes are a distinct advantage for doing this job. Another way is to remove the disc-drum and adjust the adjuster until it is only just possible to re-fit the drum....
