I'm looking for a used car for myself, a hatchback, preferably a diesel at the £5500 price limit and a car with the same body shape as a VW Golf mk4, like a Honda Civic or an Audi A3 or indeed a Golf etc, basically a hatchback on the larger side. I need a car that will (hopefully) last a long while.

Can anybody recommend me a best cars in this price range and size? I have very little knowledge of cars and would greatly appreciate some help on the choice. also if you know anywhere online or anyone to ring i would like that aswell

Thanks in advance for any replies

The "What Car Road Test Directory" is on sale at your local newsagents and/or WH Smith's now - £7.50 or thereabouts. It lists and reviews every new car on sale in the UK (from a half-page to two pages each).

It will help cut down your test-driving short list.

Alternatively read Honest John's car-by-car breakdown - just as comprehensive, but not as glossy www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm

midlifecrisis

A growing family has now led to the ultimate mid-life crisis, I think I need an estate car. I don't fancy any of the run o' the mill cars (regardless of their attributes) and am considering a new shape Legacy Tourer. I've seen 2.0 sport tourers, pre-reg, for around £15 grand. Anybody got one who can give an informed opinion? Other general comments appeciated. Read more

Yes Mapmaker,

Sadly it really has to go.The retail business I acquired is of the pet trade variety, and, amazingly, rabbit hutches, bird tables and parrot cages do seem to fit better into my borrowed LWB HiRoof VW Transporter. On the plus side, SWMBO fancies a second hand IS200 once the Sub has gone, so I may get to drive that on odd occasions. Bet it's not as reliable, and heaven forbid 20 kg of budgie seed all over the back seats!

Will post for advice on which model baby Lexus to purchase once the Legacy is gone.Boo hoo.

Hi,
I\'ve been searching the site to find contact details for the auction buyer Joe Doyle who HJ has mentioned previously.
Could someone please let me know his details.

Thanks,

We seem to be being very hard on NoDosh at the moment, in terms of the reliability of his car, his photogenic posing postures, his similarities to a much loved (?) enertainer, and so on.

I'd like therefore to propose today as, officially, National NoDosh Day. Today, we can be as hard as we want on ND and his habits. Tomorrow onwards, we can recognise all his better qualities. Until 29 July 2005, that is.

I spent a wonderful morning yesterday out at Prestwold Hall, just outside Loughborough, Leics, taking part in a Mini Racing event (which was given to me as a 30th birthday present by my wonderful other half) and had an absolutely fantastic time.

Over the four hours or so I got to drive a coach, run a fun Autotest in a Mini Cooper, be taken out for a few laps of the circuit by an instructor and then put down a few laps myself, take a gorgeous E-Type (still bearing Jack Brabham's name) out for a few more laps, and then be a passenger alongside one of their pro drivers in a Cooper S for a couple of extremely high speed (and slightly mental) laps.

Overall the circuit is fun, the staff are very friendly and helpful, and I had a great time which I won't forget. Much credit and thanks to all involved, and the highest of recommendations to anyone wanting to try a fun trackday for themselves.

Now for a public service announcement - Leicester Racecourse is hosting a small motorshow this Sunday sponsored by the Leicester Mercury. Nothing too big league, but they are going to have the X-Power and the new Misubishi Colt on display, along with a few other interesting bits and pieces. Entrance and parking are apparently free. Happy Blue!

Not sure if this should go in Technical section.

My S80 has been idling lumpily for about a month. My local Volvo specialist didn't even look at it; just said it was part that cost £500 to replace. Anyway, yesterday it got really bad and the Engine management system light came on. So I took it to a diagnostic place, who found some fault codes which made sense.

However, as soon as he read them, the fault disappeared. The warning light went out, the idle returned to steady and the emmissions is spot on.

Why then and not before?

That got you reading didn't it?

I have a question as always. As you may remember, some weeks ago I was on here whining about how 1 tyre was wearing quicker than the other and there was some wheel shake on my '99 Focus. After the advice of the BR's, I had the tracking sorted, the wheels balanced (all of them) and the steering wheel aligned.

Now - I've noticed that at 70ish, if you take your hands off the wheel (not completely off as that would be dangerous ;-) - just loosen the grip slightly) there is quite a bit of shake. The second problem is that at slower speeds the steering wheel seems to ever so slightly "bob" left then right very quickly but continuously but only if you're not gripping the steering wheel.

My question is, is this damaging the car? I only ask because the problem doesn't bother me - if you're holding the wheel properly then you dont' really notice I just don't want it to be silently damaging my car. A completely unrelated matter possibly is that when I was driving home from getting the wheels balanced, I turned right relatively quickly and heard a mechanical clang which I checked when I got home using my limited...well - non-existent mechanical skills. I dont' know how wheel balancing works but my thought was that a weight had fallen off the back wheel as the noise came from the rear. Of course, I could be wrong.

I would be very grateful for any input - if it isn't damaging the car then I don't care because like I said before, if you drive properly, then you don't notice anything.

Many thanks in advance,

Tracking has to be done/adjusted equally between both wheels.if only one side is adjusted.wear will occur on one side only.replacement of tyre wont cure it.just means replacement of same tyre more often.it sounds like you have 2 probs 1 as my previous post.the other tracking was only adjusted on one side.think DD mentioned on another thread.and is correct.try taking elsewhere to correct

Hi,

My '04 Mondeo TDCi 130 has now covered 12,500 miles, and going in for it's fist service on Saturday, but i'd like to find out if anyone else has had similar problems before I start getting the garage to investigate.

When it was new I could sence a slight knock on the steering when taking up the clutch at a junction, or sometimes when stopping, a friend in Ford Service told me there is a new design of bolt that gets fitted to Mondeo's with this fault, but wait for the service.

Since then, while in France the last few weeks an irritating resinance/vibration has made its self known between 1500 - 2000rpm. The one at 1500 is normally under heavy throttle in a higher gear, espeically up hill. It made it's self known in the Alps when using 3rd and 4th gear, 1500rpm is the point at which the torque build up, and so was labouring, more starting to pull hard.

The second one at 2000rpm is more on half load, e.g, cruising on the motorway at 75mph in 6th gear. This vibration can be stopped by slightly changing the steering angle, e.g, changing lanes.

This got worse over our 3000 mile trip, and makes using the low down torque very uncomfortable.

One last question for Mondeo TDCi owners....... Do you find the car a pig to drive around town when the air con is on?? Mine stalls easily, and generally feels heavy to drive in terms of accelerating.

I think my Mondeo (TDCi LX 2004) has the same problem with an unhappy vibration at similar revs. However, as I am moving jobs, I'm also getting a new car and the Mondeo is a bit too big to buy again. I find the seats are not very comfortable and hark back to the days of my old Escort (1994) or 306 (X reg). I'm probably going to end up with a Golf (02) Diesel instead. As a 35,000 miles per year driver it has to be a comfy car, as it is my second home!!

Hi

I've read loads in the press about certain cars (Mini Cab, SLK, CLK Cab, SL, Boxster, etc) have extremely low depreciation due to demand. Extremes being of people buying Mini's/SLKs, using them for a year and still getting list price.

The question I have is - is this really feasible in the real world, or is it a myth.

Do dealer margins on 2nd hand vehicles mean that although the advertised price may be the same as list, the price you actually receive when trading in isn't so good. It's difficult to work out from book/forecourt prices as most models discussed have huge (and expensive) options lists, so actual price paid is difficult to assess.

Ultimate goal (as is everyone?s) would be to change car every 6 months (9,000 miles) with zero depreciation. Common sense says it's impossible, but with 2 year waiting lists on some cars it may be possible in certain cases.

Interesting that there seems to be a familiar theme with these cars - German convertibles.

I'd like to hear what others think.

Thanks for the replies, I probably should have clarified my circumstances a bit better.

Hugo, I've already been down the road(s) you suggest in the past and although well proven don't fit my current situation. I've also found that recently it's very difficult selling on Mondeos/Vectras.

I do a reasonable amount of business miles, and need a car that's going to be comfortable on long journeys and also present a 'business' image - therefore have discounted options 2 & 4.

Most people that I mix with at a business level tend to have Audi/BMW/Merc/etc type cars, and although I've driven the repmobile type cars for years feel I need to get a similar car.

Hence my thoughts around the cheapest way to run one may be a car with high residuals and long waiting lists. But keep them too long and high mileage causes huge decrease in value. Also just driving a car out of a showroom also causes huge decreases.

I was just considering if there was a happy medium, where you run one for say 6 months and hopefully sell at (or near) purchase price. Like I said originally common sense says 'no way', but press say it's easy.

Regards

Dave
