Murray on Mastermind - frostbite
What a mistake that was! Just 5 points on F1, followed by 2 points on general knowledge.

Rather confirms my opinion of him, but I'm sure some will have been disappointed.

I tuned in at 9.10 - can anyone remember the questions he was asked?

A smashing bloke - I met him at a book signing in Nottingham. I'd prepared to ask him all kinds of questions such as "Who was your favourite driver, what was your favourite race" etc, but I just ended up asking him whether he was having a nice day in a star-struck kind of way!

As it happened, I 'scored' higher than he did on F1. Only question I remember was regarding where Mansell's shredded tyre cost him the championship - can't remember his reply, but it wasn't Adelaide.

That'd be at Melbourne Park.

Murray on Mastermind - Robin Reliant
A much under-rated commentator in my opinion. Unfairly lampooned on the basis of a few howlers, but all those who commentate live are guilty of those. Murray's style brought him to the notice of the p-takers in the same way as Patrick Moore, but he was always Knowledgeable and entertaining.

I always felt he had a lot to do with the success of F1 as a TV sport. I remember in the latter years when a car burst into a fireball during race re-fueling, and he calmly came up with the comment, Lets not panic", and went on to explain about how it was nowhere near as bad as it looked with the driver in flame proof overalls and the pit crew at hand, etc.

When you see the over-reaction of football commentators to trivial incidents it showed for me the man's true quality.

Sadly missed from our screens.

I couldn't agree more Tom. Although he wanted to leave before he made too many mistakes, I wish ITV would bring him back for some guest commentary or pre/post race analysis every now and then. The British GP would be the ideal event.

In the UK, we're lucky to have Martin Brundle on the commentary team. Without him there, I'd definitely turn the volume down and either put Five Live (or whatever it's called) or do it myself.

Tom,
Totally agree.

So a man aged 80 doesn\'t do well on Mastermind and that confirms somebody\'s opinion of him!!

I don\'t think anyone has doubted his experience, knowledge and enthusiasm for all forms of motor sport and surely we all enjoyed his Murrayism\'s.

Anyone who has read his autobiography will know that he has crammed more into his life than most of us could manage in two lifetimes!
Motor Racing commentary was almost a retirement job for him!
Roger. (in Spain).

I think I remember from last night that he would be on Radio 4 commentating on lawn-mower racing today, Saturday.

Tom, I couldn't agree with you more. Murray brought a lot of enjoyment to many millions (not least me) during his time commentating and the sport is poorer for his retirement.

I get sick of the current crop of commentator knowitalls blathering on to prove how clever they are and hardly adding to the entertainment (Martin Brundle excepted - he's clearly clever enough and doesn't need to prove anything to anyone - about the only good commentator on TV thesedays)

And as for losing on Mastermind - well, let's all see how well we'd do at 80.

Thanks Murray for fueling my passion for motorsport and here's to a long, healthy and happy retirement!!

Murray is great, those that haven't read his book yet should order one, its well worth a read because there's more to his life than just motor racing.

Motors TV has great commentators for DTM racing and its one of the formulas we are actually good at (thanks to Garry P). Most of the other motor racing stuff is dreadful however.

Yep, Motor racing is becoming a bit dull these days. I'm starting to watch more of the bikes as there's a lot more action -

Race 1 at Brands yesterday saw the lead change 3/4 times.

On the final lap.

And without pit stops.

Really good stuff.

Don't want to be a party pooper, but I found Murray the most annoying commentator on TV, closely followed by Coleman. He was far too hyperactive and talked utter rubbish.

ITV F1 is much more professional without him.
Motorsport - Citroënian {P}
well, it would be a bit boring around here if we all agreed on everything.

You've got every right to be wrong.

As have I ! ;-)

Sorry, a bit late on board (computer trouble leading to format of hard drive and laborious putting back of everything).

Generally, ITV does F1 better.

Only, ITV with no Murray is no better than BBC with Murray.

As to Mastermind, probably Einstein or Wittgenstein or several founders of religions might have done no better! Nor would a lot of us, not least on motor racing. It would prove nothing in those cases as well.
