Had a birthday a few days ago - something that, in my case, comes round at least once a year.

One of the presents was a selection of Autoglym car care products, a range that has tended to be somewhat out of my price range and therefore meant remaining "loyal" to Holts, CarPlan, Turtle Wax and similar brands.

Some buys have even been discontinued products picked up at car boot sales or discount outlets.

It didn't take long to try out some of the Autoglym offerings, in particular the body shampoo and conditioner (that raised a few laughs from family and friends), super resin polish and window cleaner.

What a revelation! The car wash solution left the bodywork completely shiny and free of dirt, the polish only had to be put on all over the car and then gently buffed off and the window cleaner, which comes in a paste form, left the glass all round stunningly clean.

I see now why the brand's products are so expensive - worth every penny and, what's more, you don't seem to need to use too much to get the most out of them, so that means economical as well it would seem.

Anyone else use these products? I know I won't mind paying the (considerable) extra in future as they make car care so much easier.

I've also been using the Turtle Wax Colour Magic (silver) for some time - last two cars have been thiks colour - but my version was the original American formula and cost me 99p at a discount store...:-)

Very effective, as you point out, but not as easy to apply or buff up as the Autoglym although it did leave a good finish.

I\'m after a Nissan 200 (the S14a model with the squarer headlamps). I\'ve found one that seems to be in good nick, but it\'s done 85,000 miles, albeit with a full main dealer service history.

Has anyone had any experience of high mileage 200s

Other than that, it\'s a mint-ish Touring model with a manual \'box priced at £5.5k, which seems to be good money

Any help greatfully received!

Cheers

The problem I had was finding the place! The sat nav landed me in a farmyard around Hartley Wintney. They seem to offer a comprehensive warranty and have a good stock selection. I was interested in a car there a couple of years ago but I couldn't strike a deal as we were too far away on car change cost. I have not heard any negative comments so that is a good sign.

I am currently negotiating the purchase of this \"Chelsea tractor\" from \"www.thecarsupermarket.com\". Don\'t know how it came into their possession but these Landies a fairly rare and come with a load of extras.

Its in warranty until 9/04. Turns out the service book has gone awol although Guy Salmon say they serviced it at 9k and 19k, and it had a new starter motor at 27k at Taunton Land Rover so it is assumed it still had full history at 27k. The Landie has 40k on it now. Land Rover customer services say that they dont have a central database so they cant trace the other services, and the warranty is void without full service history.

Would the experts among you please express your much valued opinions about Land Rover service history? Apart from phoning every dealer in the UK is there a way to trace this?

To be honest I am not too worried about it as I know LR dealerships are appalling from previous LR ownership, and plan to take it to a specialist. Its just the resale that worries me a little.

Many thanks in advance, and the car can be seen at www.virtual-showroom.co.uk//Images/Vehicles/8990_9...G for you Landie lovers! Read more

sounds a bit suspect but if you liked the td5 in a long wheelbase you will find it has even more go in a 90.we can swap the trailer from the disco to the 90 and get much better performance although the engines are the same.there are so many accesories about now you could end up with something looking even better than a tomb raider , hope you find what you want.

Durelli

Hi,

I'm not sure if this as been asked before, but a site search didn't find anything.

My car came with 225/45 R17 91 Y tyres. It's a diesal estate.

Apparently the high speed rating is there because of the load the tyre can come under, but 91 is the load rating saying the tyre can withstand 615Kg.

I got some new tyres at the weekend, Kumho were cheap tyres with a good name so I went for them, I was offered a choice of the standard tyre or reinforced tyre, but told I didn't need the reinforced tyre.

When I got home I found the tyre was 91 W rated.

If the car came with 91 Y's, should it remain on 91 Y's? Why would it need Y rating?

cheers

Maybe the most interesting is Peugeot's recommendation that airbag 'lifetime' should be extended from 10 to 15 years.

Question Brake Pad shims
greatspirit

On both my MX-5 & my Punto there are thin metal shims between the pad and the piston. These are usually corroded and new ones are not included with new pads. What is their purpose ans can they be dispensed with? Read more

Civic8

As DD said but I have never had a problem leaving them off.But make sure back of pad to piston/inner caliper has copperslip on not on contact areas to disc.the shims can be a pain to stop squealing if they do start.

GT_Megane

Is this a one off or does it apply to a batch of Meganes - I've just bought a 2000(W) Renault Megane 1.6 and have found that the washer on rear wipe does not work. When I switch on the rear wash it switches the front windscreen wash instead so I effectively have 2 switches to operate the front windscreen wash. A simple wiring problem I hear you cry! Nope, there is no jet nozzle in the rear wash plastic casing and if I pull back the roof lining I cannot see a rear wash pipe. It looks like this is a factory defect - anyone had a similar problem? Do you think Renault will fix it for free? Read more

pyrsue

I have a W Reg Megane 1.6 (Alize Auto) and the rear wash/wipe works fine on that.
I think your chances of getting anything out of Renault, let alone for free, are slim, but its worth asking.

> If you get a BMW they have a new Speedo and it's

very easy to read. It simply says "Not fast enough".

I don't think that either this or the barking sustem are proprietary technology -- it seems to be fitted to a growing number of VW Passats.

Agreed - this morning I had a VW Passat behind me on the A38 in Devon. I was doing 80ish overtaking lorries in the left hand lane and he came as close to me as I've ever had someone come. He was talking on his phone too, and even worse, had a little kid in the front seat with no seatbelt on. Pulling over to let him in would mean standing on the brakes to slow down enough to fit into a gap, and he was so close I really didn't think he'd be able to slow down in time.

So I carried on, and eventuallly he undertook me, frightening the pants off a lorry driver, who almost went off the road. If only there were more unmarked police cars. Read more
