Sewage, grass seed, under-insurance, funeral garb - an amazingly eclectic selection of subjects! This prompts me to add another: I have been, I have to admit, a complete wally, and been scammed by someone on ebay.I have parted with 600 smackeroos for an item I never received. All I have is a set of bank account details (probably genuine) and an address in N. London (probably incorrect). I think the scammer lived there once, but may by now be back in France (Paris area). Of course the bank will not help me. My question: can BRs suggest a way that I can get to the scammer's current address, with only the bank details to hand?
It occurs to me that, should anyone have a suggestion, they may prefer to communicate with me off-board. Read more

As a builder, I'd be happy with a JCT contract.

In the Executive, I see that you get an in-dash 6CD changer. Will this play MP3's? In the brochure it mentions an in-dash DVD/MP3 CD player as part of the video screen option for rear passengers (which I don't really want). Read more

Andy, in the Executive you get the SatNav as standard. I think I'll take an MP3 CD along to the dealer.

I hate self cancelling indicators! I bemoaned the day when Citroen gave in and fitted them. On my old CX you turned on the indicator when you wanted it, and turned it off when you had finished with it. Easy. On every car I've had since, you turn it on, get half way round a roundabout and realise that its cancelled itself, turn it on again, and again and again. Then, when you have finished with it you have to check that it has cancelled itself.

Is there any way to disable self cancelling on a modern car? I used to snap off two plastic lugs on my old bangers, (Cortina, Viva) I suspect its not that simple any more. Read more

The new fangled Vauxhall indicator switch isn't far removed from the old mechanical wind up switch fitted on some of the older buses I've worked on. The further you operated the switch, the longer the indicators stayed on. (like a kitchen timer). Nice loud click and a bright warning light as well. Vauxhall are half way there.

Does anyone know what the pedal height should be on a 1991 Celica 2.0 GTi (model ST182)?
The handbook only gives a "free-play" adjustment figure, however the USA spec Haynes manual gives a pedal height figure of 6.5-7 inches (think they are different to UK cars).
The height on mine at the moment is 6.0 inches, the free play is in spec. Thanks

I have a 96 A4 tdi 110bhp that sometimes in 1st gear (not always and only ever in 1st) behaves a little annoyingly.

When driving at a constant 1500ish rpm, the car will begin to kangaroo very badly (SWMBO accuses me of pumping the accelerator).

I think that I might already have a MAF or ECU problem as very occasionally the car will not accelerate very well at all but this will clear itself when the engine is turned off and restarted.

Any advice would be welcome as the car is under warranty for another month or so. Read more

Th catalytic converter problem - all TDIs to 1999 was due to a manufacturing defect - incorrect internal welding. Sometimes shown up by a rattle from the exhaust on idle. Mine was replaced under warrnty (1998 model)

Hi does any one know if it is possible to get access to the seat lift mechanism inside the seat back?
One of the cables has popped off its linkage. It does not look accessable with out cutting into the back of the seat.
thanks

You can take the seat back off fairly easily - it's 'hooked' into place, simply bend the hooks back at the bottom. It's easier if you take the seat back out completely. Trim is held in place with almost invisible push out pins, seat held in place with a metal circlip on each side.

I took a cable from the scrappy, from the passenger side of a car. I'm not saying you should slit the back of a seat open for easy access, but if the doberman's not looking...

why do we still get a poor deal on car warranties in the UK? checking the VW Phaeton out, same car etc but UK get 3 years warranty and US get 5. Hyundai also get a 10 year power-train warranty in the US.
Is it to do with out driving style?

It's not all that long ago that a new car warranty was only for 12 months.

Ironically the same models built in the same factory, often UK based, had a three year warranty in other countries.

Regarding the US, it has a far more stringent approach to what are termed "lemons" - you can demand your money back or a new car for some considerable time after purchase if there are a number of faults.

All down to a certain Mr R Nadar..........

My wife?s Saab 93 was in for service last week. It is a ?98 example with 56,000 miles on the clock. 2.3l non turbo variant covered by the approved Saab used car warranty supplied with the car when we bought it from a main dealer late last year.

When I went to pick up the car the informed me that the bulkhead on the passenger side of the car is starting to crack and needs attention at a cost of at least £550. (This on top of a major 66,000 mile service and new discs and pads all round is not a pleasant surprise!) They immediately said they had already written to Saab UK to ask for a contribution and they would let me know within 10 days.

I have a number of questions:

1. When querying the problem I asked if the warranty should cover the problem seeing as it is a Saab warranty on an approved Saab car. They said no the warranty did not cover. Anyone else been in a similar situation, know if that is true or not?

2. Should the selling dealer, not the servicing dealer, be approached to query the damage/problem as could it have been evident before I bought the car? Though I expect their response would be, sorry mate, no problem when we sold you the car??

3. They say the car is safe to drive, is this the case, the bulkhead surly forms part of the structural integrity of the car and is key in passenger protection.

4. Could a good independent carry out the work at a more competitive price?

Other work carried out at the service included a head re torque as they said there was a slight leak. Is there any way I can check if this has solved the problem? To be honest I did not know there was a leak, I check fluid levels every 10days 2 weeks or so and have never had to top anything other than the washer fluid.

Thanks

In fact a quick look at the car-by-car guide for the 98 Saab 93 confirms its relationship to the Cavalier: "What's Bad
Still has bulkhead mounted steering rack like Cavalier. Scuttle-shake of popular convertible can still set your teeth rattling. Reports of bulkhead fractures."

Mr Moo

Hello All,

I've recently posted an item under the 'Discussion' section but, on reflection, wondered whether it might be more appropriate under this section. I'm looking at the possibility of buying a Fiat Marea Weekend JTD 130 (5 cylinder 2.4 common rail diesel). These appear to be a bit like hens teeth but c. £3k would get me a 99 T reg. For similar money, I would only be able to afford the indirect injection XUD TD engines in the likes of 306/405, Xsara etc and I quite fancy the 5 pot common rail unit in the Fiat. Does anybody have any experience of these engines and their general reliability? I haven't really read any regular horror storiess and the Car-by-car breakdown doesn't appear to highlight any problems. Strikes me as a very cost effective way of getting a reasonably up to date diesel engine. Does anybody else know different??! Read more

I believe also that these engines will be used in the SAAB 93 Sport saoon later this year.
