Hi All
I have an \'89 Ford Sierra 2000E with automatic transmission - until recently super reliable but now have problem with automatic transmission fluid leaking. When the car is fully warmed up the ATF leaks at an alarming rate out of a small opening on the underside of the starter motor. As long as I keep topping up the ATF the car runs fine but obviously this is only a very short term solution. The starter motor is about 2 years old and works fine.
I don\'t want to replace the starter motor only to find that it isn\'t the root of the problem. Any suggetions?? I am not a great mechanic though I understand the basics and can follow instructions competantly.
I\'d appreciate any feedback from those more knowledgable than myself.
Cheers

Hi,
I've got a 10 year old Vauxhall Astra Auto 1.6 and it seems the road noise has increased gradually over the past few months. My parents say I'm paranoid, but it's driving me insane.
Tyre pressures are fine - it just seems to be the noise of rubber on tarmac that's driving me mad. Is this a common problem with my line of Astras, or is it something else that I can have fixed?
Or should I just turn the radio up?! ;) Read more
Or a mix of all three ?? ......Forgive me for feeling rather smug. My run-out model (Oct 97) 2.0l top-of-the-range Toyota Carina CDX has just sailed thru its latest MOT. At 81K miles it's still on original clutch, gearbox, exhaust, battery, pads and shoes (yes really). I had it new from a supersite for £12K. In 6 yrs it's had three Mobil 1 oil changes (DIY) per year, a cambelt change at 54K and is on its third set of Michelin tyres. It's had one new headlamp bulb, a new backlight of the dash clock, and a few sets of wipers.Apart from the cambelt change and MOTs, it's never been near a garage. Nothing has dropped off or gone wrong. My oil changes (French supermarket Mobil 1 @ £19 a tub and filters £3 apiece) I reckon have cost me £400 over 6 yrs. The cambelt change cost £120. Wiper blades and bulbs, say £40. The car has all the bells & whistles and has carted a family of five plus assorted trailers all over Europe. The local taxi firm would gladly still give me £2K+ for it. Cheap motoring or what ? An "old man's car", acceleration akin to a London bus, and a design out of date maybe ! But what a car ! So, B/roomers, have I just been lucky ??? Read more
Well Nick, I just don't know !! Being a tight-fisted northerner, I like cheap motoring. To replace what I've got, with similar and all the bits on, a new motor -say Mondeo - would set me back around £12-14K. Now I haven't got £10K sloshing around in my bank a/c doing nothing !! So, I can go into debt (which I don't like) or tootle around in my trusted Carina until either someone writes it off (thanks Hugo !) or bits begin to drop off. Talking to other Toyota owners, that's usually somewhere around 150K miles !!!! Cheers, Bob
I want to fit the VW CDL kit to my new T4 motorhome and also electric windows eventually.
Can anyone tell me where I can get a wiring diagram. Does the VW kit come complete with full instructions of where to plug into the existing wiring. Can I get a copy of the instructions anywhere?
I have tried to get a manual but that is not eaasy either.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,

An acquaintance has traded in their N plate Escort 1.6 with 70,000 miles on thc clock and bought a new base model Ka, 53 plater. Reason being that the "Escort was using too much fuel". Annual mileage was under 10,000 miles I would say.
Surely, the cost to change would far outweigh the saving in petrol costs over many years to come - even allowing for the most generous discounts and trade-in allowances?
I think he's crackers.

Does he drive an extra 20 miles to save an extra 1p a litre on his petrol too ? :-)
Hi,
Has anyone heard of a company called Deamon Tweaks?
If so, any phone number or web site details? Not had much luck in searching the web.

Dear all and H.J. H.J. always recommends the manual and says stay away from the auto landcruiser. WHY? I have several colleagues with this vehicle and they all swear by, not at, the auto. Any thoughts please.

The manuals aren't terribly nice to drive, as it's hardly a short, slick shift. Manuals are also valued a lot less than autos as well.
In theory manuals last longer, but I'm not sure that's the case either. You also have to factor in a clutch change. My autos done 170K, and apart from the odd hiccup, changes smoothly.
Road maps give the spelling of a village near Mablethorpe in Lincolnshire as Theddlethorpe St Helen, but local road signs have an "s" added at the end, i.e. Theddlethorpe St Helens. Which is correct, and who is the definitive authority on the spelling of place names?

It seems that some of you took no notice of Mark\'s earlier warning, so this thread has been write locked.

Hi,
I am considering buying a new Charade EL 3 door (seriously good value at only £5995 and so much standard kit).
Do any of you know if it is chain cam or cam belt (I really hope it is the former!).
Also, do any of you own one or know anyone who does? How are they getting on with it? My hope is that they are giving reliable, dependable service like most Japanese cars.
Many thanks in anticipation,

I don't know about the Charade but Daihatsu are wholly/partially owned by Toyota and I think they use the same engines in some models - e.g. the YRV has Yaris engines....
RE: '96 Omega 2.5 V6 Petrol, 90,000 miles
I would rather not pay main dealer c.£55 for 4 'elastic bands' (cam cover gaskets). I have seen on message boards that motor factors sell them for far less. My local Unipart cant get them.
Anyone recommend a factors that does sell them?
Also, the V6 inlet manifold is in 3 parts. To remove both left & right cam-covers, can I get away with just removing top manifold section only, or will I have to take off middle part as well?
Will I need to renew all of the rubber(?) port seals and bolt 'o'rings inbetween the manifold sections, as stated in Haynes manual, or are they generally OK to re-use? Can I get these from factors or is it MD only?
Many thanks in advance Read more
Thanks BJ, very much appreciated. Will investigate tomorrow.
Thanks for the replies - so quick!
Billy, I too was surpised to see the ATF leaking from the starter motor but it is most definately coming out of the little hole and not seeping from a seal.
Elekie&ac doctor, I think I will try your additive/sealant suggestion, any ideas on product names to look out for? I fear that removal of autobox may start a string of expense which is just not worth it on such an old car.
