I have refilled the windscreen Wash reservoir of my Peugeot 406 and seem to have a problem with the mechanism.

On testing the \'wash and wipe \' system no fluid came through - I then found that somehow it had drained onto the ground and there were signs of the fluid splashing in the area of the reservoir - although the cap was tight.

The system has worked fine except the last time I tried to use it it was dry and I assumed it had just run out of fluid.

I\'ll be glad to hear suggestions as to what may have happened please.

Thanks -

Many thanks Big_CDA - and Andrew - T for the prompt reply.

With my wife acting as observer she was able to see where the problem lay - a connection in the feed at the back of the engine compartment and just under the windscreen had become loose.

Problem solved - thanks again -

hi, my nearly new focus which i bought recently has an issue

it firstly had a shaking steering wheel on the duel carrageway and a vibration through the seats.

took it back the the place i bought it from and the swapped the wheels front to rear and no more shakey wheel.

anyone know what would cause the vibration throught the seats as it is under warranty?

thats my only fault with the car, but i do believe it was a curtosey car before i bought it? Read more

Tyres are considered 'wear and tear' items and so would not normally be covered by the warranty.

Ford dealers vary massively in terms of quality and generosity.

I think my 1995 Primera is running on the original dampers. It has covered 95,000 miles. I have owned it from 65,000 so I can\'t be 100% if they have been replaced or not.

The car no longer feels \"right\" and I suspect the dampers are to blame. On examination the springs look fine and there are no leaks from the dampers. (I wonder if the springs were replaced before I had the car because they are not corroded and look quite new)

Do I replace the front and the rear dampers only but not the springs?

Do I replace the fronts or the rears only?

It could become costly if the all 4 dampers are worn.

Incidentally, I have done the \"bounce test\" and they don\'t continue to bounce!! But they were stiffer when I first bought the car.

Are there any other tests I can perform?

Thanks in advance

Paul

The car is driven into a test area and the front and rear axle shocks are tested separately. So, to test the back shocks, both wheels on the back axle are positioned on vibrating plates, built into the test area. These plates are then activated one at a time and measurements are taken by sensors built into the plate's mechanisms

Backroomers expertise required...

Had a 'discussion' at the weekend with an elderly relative regarding when her childhood village (Bramcote nr Nottingham) was split in two by the A52 bypass. I am sure this was in the late 60's she thought it was the 70's.

As she is 'always right' I am relying on you good people to tell me when her back garden was tarmac'd?

It looks like the Astra Coupe is going. A new job means a new company car. The question is: Is the Astra Coupe desirable or not?

I've been offered £8,000 by a dealer for a 2002/52 reg 1.8 SE2, with 22,000 on the clock. Should I try privately for nearer £10,000, or just take the £8K

Recently bought a R Plate 106 67K form a main dealer but got them to change the Cam belt. Have given the car a once over and all looks good. Got a slight noise from the Cam belt area at tick over but vanishes then hot. Either the Tensioner was not changed by Peugeot or the the new belt is exciting the water pump bearing. Any thoughts here, what is the typical life of a 106 water pump. Regards Peter

Usually if a belt is over tight, it gets noiser as it heats up.......

I wonder if they replaced the tensioner? I have the remains of one on the bench at work after it broke up, bending 4 valves.

Guy Lacey\'s reference to his classic Archive \"anall day benders\" thread prompts me to ask for other nominations of classic BR threads and posts.

There are plenty of outstanding threads and posts mixed in amongst the mundane – funny, weird, amazing, tragic, outrageous, and even disapointing.

Synthetic is very good at leaking, but can be defeated. I used Mobil 1 in a Mitsubishi Sapporo, the cam cover gasket would always seep, although I could get temporary relief with gasket adhesives. I now use Mobil 1 in a Honda Civic with 125k miles on it, doesn't seem to leak at all although it does seem to use some oil at a very slow rate.
Do you have any of the various newer oil formulations advertised for elderly engines available in your area? They are supposed to be endowed with extra doses of seal swellers and other additives to benefit the rickety old machine. Alternately, cans of just seal swellant oil additive are available; although I personally wouldn't recommend this particular combination of worn engine, synthetic oil, and seal swellant as some kind of optimum setup.
(Parenthetical aside; the one time I tried a can of that stuff, the next time I tried to remove my personally hand-tightened by myself 3 months previous, normally simple to remove oil filter, it was so tight that I broke the weld in my oil filter wrench, and ended up delivering the car to a garage to deal with it. They eventually got it loose; there was no crossthreading or anything else wrong, it was just good and stuck. I feel the two unusual events (use of seal sweller, unremovable oil filter) are most likely correlated. So, I presume the stuff at least does make worn leaky rubber seals swell up effectively, as advertised. Unwanted side effects may result, however.)

What is the worst car bodging you will admit to?

I once rewired most of my Triumph Vitesse with the same brown wire (got a whole reel for £1 at a carboot sale). Live or earth, all brown. It worked, but what the next owner thought when something went wrong I hate to imagine...

9 year old, 130k ZX TD - bodged to trade in for £1200.

Head gasket blown, coolant being expelled through top of radiator as it boiled. Engine fan operating constantly to try to cool engine.

I drove it 5 miles to the dealer's premesis at 5-10mph, stopped while just out of sight and waited for engine to cool. Took a couple of 2-litre water bottles from the boot and topped up the coolant then removed the fan's fuse. I then drove round the corner to the dealer's premesis, handed him the keys, said nothing and drove off in my new toy.

I next saw the car some months later. It was still parked round the back of his premesis looking very sorry for itself with the engine in bits.

Do i feel guilty? of course not. Would you?
