I have decided to ditch the Punto and get a different car.
The one that I have seen is a Polo "Open" which has a full length electric sunroof (well its that black stuff that the make cabriolet hoods out of I think). Having driven one a few years back I was very impressed.
However getting hold of one from a vw dealer is like pulling hens teeth.
So the question is are there any other small to medium size hatchback cars that have a full length sunroof fitted as standard. Car can be second hand and less than £7000.
I dont want a Cabriolet/2cv/targa top just a car with a full length sunroof.

Hi my rover 214 si has just staerted to make a rattle noise from the gearbox i believe. when out of gear the box seems to make a rumbling noise like bearings??? put my foot on the clutch and the noise stops lift off again and the noise comes back. When actually driving the car its there still. Smooth gear changes no other problems just this noise. Phones 2 garages today they reckon the bearings in the gearbox so a recon needed. BUT a mechanic I know reckons its just the release bearing as it makes the noise when out of gear?? your help will be greatly appreciated so I can sort the problem asap
many thanks matt Read more
Clutch release bearings make a noise when yo put your foot ON the clutch.
Simplicate and add lightness!

Try Devon View Garage in South Cornelly, near Porthcawl. It's a couple of old geezers down a dirt track, in a quarry, but they're cheap and they're one of the few people who will still touch rust-based welding.

Hi, I do hope you can help. I have a 99 Astra Envoy Diesel, runs well but at around 85 on the temp gauge the engine management light comes on and the system goes into safe mode. I think the cooling fan sensor may not be sending correctly. Drop down to 60mph and the system reactivates but cruise at 3000 revs and the light will stay on all day. Any help really appreciated.

Slow Go! Like that analogy!
I'd ask for a quick fault code diagnosis at service-time - would you take it to a Vauxhall Dealership or a specialist? Try and find a good specialist with the right kit and you'll be laughing.
With a bit of luck, there will be some stored fault codes which will steer you in the right direction for a fix, hopefully cheaply!
Saw one of those huge new american 4x4s in town the other day- not sure what it was but is was much bigger than a cherokee/ range rover...anyway it had chrome wheels which when the car came to a halt carried on spinning!! before you ask i was sober! anyone seen these before and how do they work?? I think it was a slightly different feature. Just the badge
on the wheels was involved. The effect was to ensure the
badge was always the right way up when the vehicle was
stopped / parked. I assume some sort of counter weight behind
the badge was required to do this.

You're right. I was replying to Martin123's comment that the Bently badges stay the right way up in the centre of Bentley wheels! ;-)

"People think you get DVT (deep vein thrombosis) by sitting in cramped airline seats. But in reality there is a link between sitting still for long periods in any situation. It can happen if you are in an aeroplane, a vehicle or on a train."
So commented a consultant vascular surgeon following the death of a hire-car driver who suffered a blood clot in his calf during a five-hour return trip to Heathrow.
So, as this subject does not appear to have been mentioned in the Backroom before, I thought it advisable to remind others as well as myself that regular stops on long journeys are not only to relieve oneself and to avoid tiredness but also to keep DVT at bay. Read more
As someone who, until recently, sold the "Coaguchek S" Warfarin home-monitoring kit, I am aware of the risks of DVT.
A clot, be it DVT, Pulmonary Embolism or other, can indeed be caused by sitting for long periods. Warfarin, a blood thinning agent, is usually taken to prevent clotting. Similarly, Vitamin E will have the same effect. This is found in Liver, Egg yolks, Milk fats, nuts, seeds, butters and oils. If you have a fairly balanced diet with a leaning towards these foods, you should reduce any chance of a clot.
With most roadside burger vans being predominantly "greasy", it may explain why most truck/van drivers don't have a high rate of DVTs.
For more advice on this, contact Michael Knight at www.anticoagulationeurope.org
Incidentally, if any of you are on Warfarin, the Coaguchek retails at £399. I have an ex-demo kit for £100.

I need to replace an oil seal where the gear selector rod goes into the gearbox top housing as it’s leaking slightly.
Is it safe to undo the 4 bolts and remove the top housing or will bits fall out everywhere resulting in a Chinese puzzle?
Secondly how is the cover sealed to the gearbox; gasket or sealant?
Better still, has anyone done this repair before and advise me on the best approach.
Thanks in advance.

There is a little rubber bung that fits in a hole by the selector shaft. These can 'go missing' and you get oil leaking out of there (its only a few mm diameter). Just check it is not missing before you do anything else. Vauxhall storeman will know the PN by heart....
If you do need to take the top plate off, don't worry - its dead easy, nothing springs out. I've done a few.
I am hopefully about to do a deal with my local Mitsubishi dealer on a new shape shogun, I have now had 3 shoguns all of which have been excellent and very reliable. The new model is a 2000 Y reg new shape 3.2 diesel with 52k on the clock, 1 owner. Can anyone answer the following questions?
1)What is triptronic automatic gears?
2)Is that a fair price?
3)Anyone ANY knowledge on these new shape ones?
4)My 98 model is a 2.8 Diesel, what should I expect from this new 3.2 Diesel one?
Thanks in advance. Read more
Isn't the new 3.2 diesel the one with Direct Injection. This should make it more powerful, responsive and economical than the previous model.
Turbo-diesels and automatics work very well together, so you should be very happy.

You probably won't believe I'm having to ask this, but...
I've just realised my MOT is due on Wednesday. In the past I have always used a mobile mechanic who takes the car, gets it tested, does the work, and returns it to me with a certificate, so all I know about the process is that I end up paying a load of money at the end.
This time, I don't want to use that mechanic, and I haven't a clue what the normal procedure is.
Do I take the car to a garage, get it tested, take it away to someone else (assuming there are problems) and then take it back for a retest?
Or does the testing garage do the work? - surely if that's the case then they can make up faults that I'd be none the wiser about.
And do I just turn up, or is it something that needs to be booked in advance?
Thanks to anyone who can be bothered to answer such an ignorant post.

Thanks Blue.
Actually that's exactly what I did with my old Renault, spent a mint trying to keep it on the road till I finally decided enough was enough. Could have bought quite a nice car with all the money I wasted on that!

Pluriel looks very nice, but its way over budget.
Already have a people carrier. The Ka could be a possibility though they were only 2000 made (seat ibiza was only 200 !!) and I cant find any lupo or arosa with the full length sunroof though I am sure that I have seen them about (none in autotrader).
but... I think that it will still be an Openair Polo.
Thanks for the info
