I have owned this car since new...multiple problems...electrics /lights/brakes etc. Latest problem...the TURBO is leaking oil. Luckily I have warranty up to 60,000 miles but HAVE to get rid of it before then as cannot afford the repairs! I will NEVER buy another Volvo.
Considered more of a Discussion thread than a Technical Matters thread to me, hence moved to Discussion. DD Read more

1989 BX DTR turbo diesel hatch in white. One owner from new & only selling as wife wants a new Toyota Yaris. Full history, always garaged, a couple a supermarket type dings but otherwise good, MOT to Jan 2004, tax June 2003, towbar fitted but only used a few times for a light boat. Boot will contain spares such as new discs/pads, brakes hoses and some other used items parts.
Located in Bridgewater Somerset but owner is coming up to the Aylesbury Toyota dealer next Tuesday 4th March to collect their new Yaris. He will be in the BX that day and could sell it there and then to someone who would meet.
Asking for offers on £250 but will be *very* realistic for a true enthusiast.
Any interest?? Contact Reg James on 01278 732606 or post a contact here and I'll get back to you.

it makes good reading and there are some really knowledgeable enthusiasts who will help with any problem (Including Middleman, I think!)
Is it me or is the BMW 318 driver seat a really uncomfortable pew? Read more
I find all BMW saloons apart from the 7 series very uncomfortable. It isn't just the seat, it's the way that the pdeals and steering wheel are off centre as well. Seems to happen in both LHD and RHD cars.
As a sort of extension to the motoring programmes thread I was wondering what others felt their most memorable tv motoring moments were? My top 2 are:
1) Dominic wotsit being sick in the mercedes driven by Damon Hill.
2) Michelle Newman crashing a milk float just after uttering how embarrassing it would be to lose control of such a vehicle.
As you can tell I'm a bit of a schadenfreude!

Just remembered another - driving up a mountain track in remote eastern Turkey to arrive at the top only to discover the most gloriously clean river in the valley below surrounded by lush vegetation, fig trees etc. etc. Just like an oasis in the desert - a total and most beautiful contrast :-) Happy days those !
Hoping someone out there in the backroom has been here before.....
Have an ols coupe with the combined power steering and central hydraulics system (aids the brake servo). Yesterday I drained the system in order to remove a bit of it and get to something else. Re-filled the system, bled it and checked as per Haynes manual, all seemed OK.
But it's not. The auto-check system displays the symbol indicating a problem with the system (low fluid level or lack of pressure), and the pump makes a bit of noise that wasn't there before. If the steering is moved (engine running) it also makes an unpleasantly painful noise.
My assumption is that the system is failing to build up pressure as it should, but I don't know why. Any ideas/similar tales of woe (with happy, inexpensive endings) appreciated.
Thanks Read more
Hi Ian and Richard
Fantastic, thanks, feel somewhat reassured with those replies. I think I'd agree with Richard about little pockets getting trapped in funny places in the system - noticed something along those lines whilst trying to bleed it again this morning.
For the moment I will live with my paranoia, keep an eye on the reservoir and wait for it to sort itself out.
I think the noise must be air in the system as all I did was drain it (to remove one of the pipes to gain access to the thermostat - changing that has sorted out the temperature gauge too Richard) and refill; haven't moved the pump or the belt at all. But only 'cos it wasn't in the way of anything.
Anyway, ta very much gentleman. Hope you'll be around next time I think I've broken something.
What with these cars and their appetite for head light bulbs.
The works pool car is a P Reg 416i, which will happily much its way through 3-4 bulbs a year.
My Civic VTI has used 3 in 9 months of ownership and the driver?s side has just gone again.
My brothers N Reg 416Si is already on its first replacement bulb and he?s only had it 3 weeks!!
Look on the road and you see loads of 400s and Civics with blown bulbs.
The only thing I have come across like this is Vauxhalls and their hunger for dash and heater control bulbs. I?ve had an X Reg Astra van which liked to eat them, a W Reg Vectra which liked to blow the ones behind the Speedo unit and an old J Reg Astra years ago which used to go through a complete set every 6 months, I got to be quite and expert at changing them.

I noticed B&Q (Warehouse in Reading, not sure if this is the smaller B&Q's too) are selling decent quality GE automotive bulbs at pretty reasonable prices, ie, standard H7 at £6.95 I think. OEM bulbs are generally either Philips, Osram or GE.
Also noticed two or three years ago that decent Osram bulbs were on sale at most filling stations and motorway services in France and Germany. All we seem to get here are cheap and nasty unknown brands in similar places!
Personally I think they should pay up:-)

Because Y99 is a 80+ year old car that looks like a farm cart with a leather sofa stuck on it and tiller steering ie really ancient and not mistakeable for a 'normal' car as might be seen cruising Ken's ghetto!
The Clio could do with an oil change, but it's not yet due a full service...
I'm mechanically inept so don't want to try it myself.
Looked in the list of Good Garages, but nothing in Halifax / Bradford - is it worth taking it along to a fast-fit outfit for this (I'm assuming) simple task?
Any help appreciated as ever,
Lee.

Lee - oops, sorry. I had printed off the voucher in December when it did agree with the wording on the web-site. It looks like they have put up the price but forgotten to update the web-page - which is not too uncommon. (On Saturday went to a D Tel ad for a holiday, clicked on the hol-company's "latest offers" page and found it to list August 2002 holidays!).
My wife's 1.6 8 valve, '97, 55,000 mile Astra is carrying quite alot of cream sludge, in the rocker cover and also on the dipstick which suggests pretty well covered in the crankcase.
With just the pottering type mileage she does it is to be expected - but should I be concerned about it?
Is there an easy way to get rid of it, such as me using the car for my long journey runs or should I use an engine flush or......
Be pleased to hear suggestions/observations Read more
This seems a problem common to Vauxhall 1.6L engines used for short runs.
My friend has a 1.6L, 8 valve, Cavalier.
His car never had any sludge, until this winter, which is when his car use changed to exclusively short journeys. He has changed the oil, tried "italian tunes", but the sludge problem persists as the car is still used for short runs. Now, once every week, on return from his last short run of the week, he allows the car to run on standstill to a high temperature (such that the cooling fan cuts in) for 10 - 15 minutes. That gets rid of the weeks "mayo" that has built up.
Incidentally, he used to run a Rover/Honda, 1.4 litre, 12 valve engine over the same jouney for 6 years, and t never had even the slightest sign of "mayo". His wife used to run the Cavalier for the previous 8 years on long journeys without any sign of "mayo".
I own a compaq iPAQ 3850 pocket p.c. and have been reading about GPS recievers that you can clip on to turn the unit into a navigation system for your car.
Has anyone got this system or heard of it and is it any good or just a silly gimmick.
Any response would be helpfull as I was considering having a Sat-Nav system fitted but the above way of doing it is fairly cheap compared to a fully fitted system

Have a look at this too:

I have nothing but praise and chose it in preference to the Navman to use with my 3850. You can get the whole of the UK to street level onto a 256MB SD card so you don't need an expansion jacket. I like the way the power supply and GPS sensor just plugs in, and the vent mount. But it's not strictly a hand-held system so you can't use it away from the car.
Maps, searching by postcode, voice directions and automatic recalculation of routes if you take a diversion are all good too.
