February 2003
Following my unfortunate incident with my last car, I am in the market for a new runaround. Any advice offered would be appreciated. Looking for something up to around £9k, preferably hatchback, supermini size or perhaps VW Golf (although I find this a little large). I had been considering the Fabia but following the ridicule I got just for even mentioning it (I am 24 BTW) notwithstanding all its apparent qualities I am inclined to go for something else now. Have been seriously considering the Peugeot 206 2.0 HDi D-Turbo. Any thoughts on this or any other "lad about town" type car would be very welcome. Read more
I have a Mondeo Mk3'2002 (TDCi 130 Trend version). It is not equipped with board computer. Is it possible to install such a device in my car and, if so, how much does it cost?

As promised from ND's Yaris strand, here's an opportunity for everyone to sound off about the worst, most snobbish treatment they've had from a dealer.
Sentiment seems to suggest some of the prestige guys are the worst, with BMW palace's getting a fair bit of stick.
Careful with the names, though...some people are pretty fierce at 'defending' their reputation Read more
No AS the one I am thinking about is in Suffolk. Getting back to the negative note, there is a VW dealer I won't be bothering with. Five years ago I was looking for a new car and a VW Golf was on my short list of two. I went to the VW showroom to arrange a test drive. Their whole attitude was appalling sort of what a nuisance a potential customer.
I want to store my car in a friend's garage for the summer whilst working abroad (and will declare SORN). My current insurance policy won't cover this, and I don't want the expense of getting another standard policy (i.e. including third party cover), which seems to be the only option from major insurers.
Does anyone know where I can get say 6 month fire and theft only cover. Something like the kind of thing that seems to be available for classic cars, but for a 3 year old car.
Thanks
Ed

I'm picking up my V70 D5 later this week. Its done 17k so with 12,000 miles service intervals, it could do with an interim oil / filter change pdq (as generally recommended for long life in the backroom).
My question is where should I get this done, as I am a tad reluctant to pay Volvo dealer labour charges. If I go to Kwik Fit or similar what oil should I specify and would this have any effect on the Volvo warranty?
(I know I should have built this into the negotiations when I did the deal, but I didn't think of it at the time)
Thanks

Two weeks after a Kwikfit oil change I had leaking cam rocker cover gaskets and just under an inch of oil over the MAX mark on the dipstick.
A coincidence perhaps, but an expensive one!
Hi can any one please help. I have a 318i BMW (new shape) - auto. The car runs slightly rough without the a/c on, and a slight vibration is felt through the steering wheel - the engine never cuts out, BMW diagnostics say its OK. Turning on the a/c reduces the vibration considerably. is this simply a case of idle speed adjustment? In P or N the idle is fine.

Last year there used to be a regular thread on Salvage Squad (it usually degenerated into a discussion on the number of rivets in a scuttle plate! ) Isnt anyone bothering with watching it this year?
Last night was a very nice 3 wheel Morgan...complete if a little the worse for wear.
Mind you I didnt go much for the brushpainting the aluminium bodywork without (apparently) using an aluminium primer. Wish they had covered more on the drive train mechanics rather than the leaf springs which have been covered on other restorations.
over to you all
regards

"Oops aviation. This thread is dead as the earlier aviation thread."
Surely you are not refering to that enormously long (99 posts) thread on Merlin Valves?
As an owner of a '97 1.25 Fiesta Zetec for the last 5 years, I've been totally smitten, not only by by it's great handling but also by the excellent engineering design that's gone into its 1250 engine. It's smooth and powerful and so easy to maintain. 100,000 mile cambelt intervals, 40K spark plugs , all the filters in easy to get at places and a smile from my wallet when the main dealer asks for £2 for the oil filter...
Where is all this going you ask?
Well the "family" has arrived and the little F isn't big enough. I'd like to stick with Ford because I think they've cracked it now as far as the best compromise between a drivers car and cost of running is concerned. My own experience of VW and the like is that they've been no more reliable than the fiesta, not as much fun to drive and the bits cost at least twice as much.
I'd like a new Mondeo diesel and this is where you Ford Diesel experts come in:
How many Diesel variants have their been in the NEW mondeo since it's introduction?
Was the 1st 2.0 "TD" New mondeo a bored out version of the old Mk2's 1.8TD?
Are the 115TDCi and 130TDCi the same engine with slight tuning differences.
What about the new TDCi due from ford/PSA - is it completely new again or based on the current chain driven TDCi?
I'm reading a lot of useful stuff on here about case hardening problems and flats spots due to buggy EMS software - is this sorted or still ongoing with new models?
While on the sbject of TDCi what's the 1.4 motor in the new fiesta/fusion like - any problems yet?
Finally, as a keen diy'er what are the TDCis like to maintain?
Thanks in advance.

There have been 3 variants of the diesel in the new Mondeo
TDDi 115PS
TDCi 130PS
TDCi 115PS
The first engine in the new Mondeo (TDDi 115PS) was not a variant of the previous models engine. It is pretty much new. This engine was then fitted with common rail injection to become the TDCi 130PS. The more recent TDCi 115PS is just a recalibrated version of the 130PS engine.
The new TDCi talked about recently is a PSA engine and is in the new Fiesta as a 1.4. It will be introduced into the Focus C-Max as a 1.6. There will also be a 2.0 PSA engine in C-Max. The 1.4 and 1.6 are belt drive and I'm pretty sure the 2.0 is as well.
The 1.4 TDCi in Fiesta is OK but only 68PS. Worth waiting for the 1.6 version.
Nothing special about maintaining a TDCi. Belt/tensioner life on the PSA engine is 150000 miles. IS HJ listening??
My 2001 525 diesel engine judders like it's misfiring or running on 5 cylinders. This happens when you stop it and start it again after sitting for 10/15 mins with the engine hot. It goes after 5 to 10 minutes at idle or if you hold the revs at 1500/2000 for a few minutes. Occassionally it hapens in third when you accelerate through 1500/2000 rpm and it feels like you loose power.
I think it is fuel related, could it be air in the common rail or foaming or the injectors or loss of pressure in the rail?
I also wonder if the air sensors are playing up.
Surprise surprise my BMW garage cannot find the fault!
Any ideas?

Contact another garage and see if they have had the problem before, contact BMW UK.
If that fails, buy a Citroen C5, nearly as big, more comfy and super diesels!

Anyone any ideas how to stop white mayonaise from forming
in the filler cap and hoses between rocker cover and air filter.
I change the oil every 5000 miles,I recently changed the air
filter and removed the rocker cover and hoses to clean them
but it seems to reform very quickly. It is a 1996 1.3 gls.
Any help appreciated.

I hired a 206 HDi for the weekend a couple of weeks ago. I was actually surprised to find I liked it - it had reasonable go and excellent economy. The performance was even more surprising when I found out it was only the 1.4 version!
Someone mentioned the cramped footwell - surprisingly I had decent space for my size 11s, it was in a different league to the 106/Saxo which I find downright dangerous in that respect (very very easy to press two pedals at once).
