Remember these pendant gadgets? They pick up trafficmaster signals and display traffic congestion situations using a combination of LED's and audio alerts.
I have one but unfortunately do not have the instructions for it - can anyone help, as I want to pass it on to colleague? A scan of the symbols and their meanings would be fine, or if anyone knows where I can download the manual please let me know. You can reply to my email address : simon@svpworld.com.

Our Fiat Punto has a problem with its wipers, as described in the car by car breakdown. The local dealership fixed it under the warranty but the problem recurred. Now they say it needs a new wiper motor. What would be a reasonable length of time to wait for such a replacement part? So far it is 3 weeks and counting. Local Fiat garage are very dismissive when I call to ask on progress./ Read more

Can't speak for Fiat, but Citroen do next day parts service as long as they are in the UK, and you order by about 4pm. Items that have to come from France are usually about a week. This applies even to the exhaust manifold studs and gaskets I have just got for my 1984 Visa!!

3 weeks is certainly OTT - esp as you can't drive the car with no wipers!

In recent years there has been a massive improvement in passive safety in cars (ABS, airbags, side impact etc etc) yet the death rate has not changed significantly (although I guess there are more and more cars, so the rate per car / mile must have gone down). Does anybody know, or know where to find, if the figures are compiled in such a way as to see if these 'safety' devices are actually reducing the number of accidents, or, indeed, INCREASING them as people feel cocooned and drive accordingly? Or are they just reducing the severity from an increasing number of accidents? As I drive a car that's half plastic (Citroen BX) and would probably fold up if it encountered a modern 'safe' tank, I driver VERY defensively....

This question was really brought about by the thread abuot the Welsh figures - mis quoting of stats by the press is one of my particular bug bears (aling with the mis use of apostrophes - pedant, who, me?). The recent one about "25% of cars are so dangerous they should be taken of the road" really annoyed me - what they meant was 25% of a very small sample (4000 - 0.02% of cars on the road - hardly statistically significant) of cars that were chosen becuase they LOOKED like they might be poorly maintained were not roadworthy......

I am in the process of buying a Citroen C5 2.2 HDI Exclusive SE estate - my dealer told me the car was in the UK as of last week.

I heard today that there is a delay due to a recall by Citroen UK - does anybody know if this is related to the reported estaterecall in Germany?

And before anybody says I'm mad to buy one I've had approx 17 "new" cars in 23 years of driveing from many manufacturers from VW to Isuzu and many subject to recalls. Ask the 40,000 BMW Mini owners who are now subject to a gearbox recall or my friend who has a Mercedes ML270 that had a complete new gearbox after 500 miles.

But if we campaign against smoking while driving someone might think
using a mobile phone on the move is almost as dangerous
and try to ban that too.

But how many of us throw a mobile phone out the window :o)

Mk III Golf 1.8 ABS Engine 75,000 Miles Recently I have noticed a noise creeping in at about 40 mph and peaking at about 70mph. This light noise is speed related not engine rpm, or gear related, and quite highly pitched even at 40 mph. It is not effected by braking or by weaving the car to alter the weight on wheel effect. Noises are always difficult to describe but initially I thought it was something rubbing on the disc, a small stone or trapped twig although a little more metalic than a twig. I guess a light piece of mig welding wire rubbing the used surface of the disc would be a fair description.

I have stripped and check the calipers for contamination to no avail. The front wheel bearings feel perfect but of course I can not spin these at 60 mph. The noise is not a rumble at all it is more a rubbing type noise and continues in neutral to is limited to wheels, discs, drive shafts, diff /gearbox output shaft etc. Having said does not sound like the innards but more an externally generated noise it is constant and has no cyclic element. Anybody got any ideas on this, or experience similar noises on golfs. Thanks

Can anyone please tell me how to check and set-up the EGR on a Ford 2.5 litre DI Diesel engine?

I have a Haynes manual, but it is not very helpful and several mechanics that I have asked simply have not known.

I suspect that the EGR may be defective / not set correctly as the exhaust is showing some black smoke.

I don't think you can do much with them. The one faulty valve I've come across in a fleet of 30 odd transits caused other problems such as dense clouds of acrid smoke and poor performance for the first few minutes after a cold start.
Try blanking off the exhaust intake pipe to the valve, put half a can of injector cleaner in the fuel filter and the other half in the tank. Give the engine a good hard run, With any luck it should be fairly smoke free after this. Check for smoke on next cold start. If all is well, reconnect egr valve and see if smoke returns on next cold start. (cold start means at least overnight)
