If you are planning a route, try this site www.maporama.com - it is good and in my opinion much more detailed than the AA or the RAC - give it a go!!

Question New brake pads
smokie

The Omega MV6 is nearly due new pads, and I remember reading posts here about EBC Green Stuff pads being similar prices to OEM brake pads and yet having superior stopping power and also less dust.

I have found one place which sells them over the net (there may be more...) and a set of 4 is about £60.

I don't know how this compares to OEM prices, but are there any expert opinions as to whether I should or should not get them? Although I drive the car fast, I'm reasonably gentle on my brakes...and I don't do track days or suchlike. Read more

I reckon you could get 40k out of a set of pads... I replaced the pads after I had driven the car for 30k, and the pads still had a fair bit of life in them...

Tenuous motoring connection, but it does involve 4 wheels and an engine! Two observations re. electric wheelchairs.
1. A few weeks ago I was witness when a gentleman somewhat the worse for drink created havoc in a local Tesco. He ran into a queue at the checkout, causing bruising to a man's leg, and afterwards collided with the customer service desk, before leaving the store.
2. Over the past few days I've noticed a local gentleman driving past on the pavement in his electric wheelchair. However, he seems to have had it race-tuned- it screams(literally)along the pavement at speeds of up to 15mph - (we're talking scarf trailing in the wind of passage like Snoopy in his WW1 Camel!)
Is there a legal speed limit for these wheelchairs? The gent would probably break bones if he hit anyone, and he doesn't slow down before crossing side roads, either!

The one at the top of this page seems to be the Ferrari of wheelchairs. Note superbike-style slanted headlights, headrest to protect against whiplash injuries, and the neat little chrome bullbar for knocking pedestrians out of the way. 11 mph may not sound much, but I wouldn't want to meet one of these on a crowded pavement at that speed.

Code is on VIN plate inside nearside door shut.
Better still, as mentioned before, the paint will have faded by now, so run it down to a local paintfactor to check it.They will make you up a good match for £5-£10.

Got back from five days in the sun and the above vehicle would not start. AA checked everything, and could find no fault in the electrics. Bizarrely the car started perfectly whenever he had his test probe on! Drove it to Crown Rover in Soham (of abduction fame) for them to check out, suspecting it needed a new ECU.

They could find no fault at all. Apparently, they have seen the identical fault on two other similar cars since the torrential rain last week.

Just to let you know that it is pretty benign - just leave the car to dry out completely in a dry warm garage, and all should be well! Read more

Check the main HT lead from coil to distributor cap, this runs along the front panel & gets covered in crud, when it gets damp it shorts out. Engine then overfuels leaving spark plugs dripping with petrol & will not start.I used to see loads of these when I worked as recovery driver for a Rover Dealer.

I know that there has been a lot of discussion previously regarding the inaccuracy of the speed indicated to that actually being done (c. 5-10% IIRC).

However I was doing an indicated 90 mph and put oin cruise control. I then checked the average speed that I was doing on the trip computer and it said that I was doing 86.3mph.

Which one is likely to be more accurate or will they both be wrong? If the trip computer is going to be the correct one, why not have a digital speedo? Read more

same as all of the research into what kinds of personalities make the best submarine crews, locked together potentially for months on end

turned out that a balanced cross section of ordinary personality types was the best

of course thats right cos thats how nature chose us in the first place ?

still think the emergency repairs to the swiches on the moon landers etc are such great stories

Toad, of Toad Hall.

Been chatting with mates about biking safety gear recently.

I thought someone who'd seen a few real crashes might have a view on what saves life and limb in the real world and what's just gimmick.

Any of the ex-rozzers/seasoned bike crashers on the site care to offer their experienced view on what safety gear really helps bikers in the event of a crash?

Does helmet quality prevent injury in the real world?
Back protectors?
Other body armour.

Is there any safety gear that is really a danger. (Ill fitting armour looks lethal to me...)

Eg: Shoei wearers have an x% better chance of surviving
an impact of x weight at x speed. A long search of
the web hasn't revealed an answer so I suspect
there isn't a good one.

Surely someone somewhere should be recording the details of what helmets were worn by casualties, or at least of fatalities.
Question BMW C1 scooter?
Harmattan

Does anyone have first hand or good secondhand experience of the BMW C1 scooter? I have read many of the motorcycle press reviews but am asking the question here because the C1 is aimed at car drivers looking for occasional cheaper and parkable transport, and therefore the opinion might be different from that of a two wheel diehard.

The C1 looks like being phased out next year but meantime it is available on ultra-low interest rates which makes its comfort & safety -oriented package look interesting to someone whose last 'bike was an umpteenth hand Triumph Trials Cub. I want to find out if it is really more difficult to ride than a normal scooter which might rule out it being used by all the family as a short trip runabout that can be kept in the garden shed. Please no arguments about a secondhand Matiz for the same money, sometimes a man's got to do what a man's got to do.

There is an S reg Golf gt tdi for sale through an independent garage. it's done 70000miles and looks to be in good condition. They're asking 8499 for it. I would be part ex-ing a 1995 N reg Golf match with FSH and 45000miles on the clock, which is maybe worth between 2300-2800 I think. What I need to know is are these reasonable figures and what can I expect from the salesman when I start haggling???

Hi all,

Does anybody know how to remove the rear view mirror on an Omega. As far as I can see there seems to be two possible ways as the mirror assy is "mounted" on the glass to a carrier:

1) Slid up onto carrier
2) Snapped over carrier

I'm keen to know which as getting it wrong will cause damage.

Regards .......

Its the same as most other Vauxhall's it slides onto a metal plate thats glued to the windscreen you have to loosen a small socket screw with an allan key. The plate is stuck on with a special two pack adhesive, sticky pads & super glue dosen't work with the weight of Vauxhall mirrors.
