Have just read a letter in my local paper regarding parking tickets.

The writer is of the opinion that because it states on the front of the parking ticket that "it is a criminal offence to remove or interfere with this notice" then to remove or open said ticket would be a criminal offence and therefore one cannot pay the requisite parking fine.

Is he right or wrong in his assumption?

I?ve being storing some diesel in an outdoor storage tank. Unfortunately the fuel has become contaminated with water. Would it be sufficient to carefully syphon off the diesel from the top of the tank after the water has settled on the bottom.

Would any water residue, however small, remain in this recovered diesel?

Would it be enough to damage an engine/fuel pump of a VW TDI ? Read more

Any idea what I should expect to pay for supply & fix of a new timing belt & tensioner for a Vauxhall Vectra 2.0 16v ? I've just payed £140 + vat for a full service at Vauxhall, but they didn't change the belt or tensioner.
The car has done 40k and is a May 2000 model.

Thanks in advance Read more

Vauxhall is also going back to chain drive. The 1.2 16v (ex Suzuki) in the Corsa and the 2.2 16v alloy-block in the Omega are both chain drive. I think the new Vectra will also be.

I know, i have asked this one before.

My Passat is now back from the garage after MOT and general check to findout why the power keeps fading away and dropping me down to 50 or 40 mph with the revs screaming. The mechanic could not find anything, but changed the fuel filter and air filter anyway. This problem is intermittent, coming and going may be four times over an hours driving. It does not seem to be turbo probs either.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be greatly appreciated.

thanks
p.s i thought about dirty injectors, a build up of muck somewhere in the system, some kind of malfunctioning sensor in the fuel pump, air bubbles (although there are only one or two)??? Read more

Driving along a regular route today (where I know there are two sets of temporary traffic lights about 500m apart) came up behind a bus stopped in the road with its hazards on (well it is a fast bit of road), the car in front of me duely pulled up behind it as did, I followed about 15 others - all sitting there as patient as anything. The "pulse" of opposing traffic died out and still we waited, waited and waited. Anyway the passanger of the car in front got out, I thought "strange" only to run back, get in and the driver to pull out past the bus, I of course followed to find ourselves short of the lights by about 15 meters, which were happily running through the sequence on their own. The bus had obviously broken down (or something) just short of the lights, ended up chuckling to myself about the sheep like qualities of drivers - including myself. Read more

I am looking at a VW Golf gti 2.0 16v on a P at a trader, who is selling it for £7000. Parkers has it at £6300 for A1 at retail, less for good or fair. Same for a few other golf gti derivatives.

Trying to trade in an alfa gtv 2,0 lusso in "A1" condition, we cannot get any offers that come near the prices that we should allegedly be getting according to Parkers. Parkers says that trade for this car is £8250 yet we are being offered £6500.

I accept that traders operate in the real world and they have to make a profit like we all do but why are Parkers prices so wildly different to our "real-life" experiences? Eh? Read more

HGVs and Coaches are banned from the outside lane on motorways.

I understood that this does NOT apply to 3 lane highways. e.g. the 3 lane A40 which runs from the M40 into London, even though this road is virtually motorway standard.

A pal thinks they are banned on this type of road.

Who is correct please?

Anyone interested in checking if their local speed cameras comply with government guidelines regarding visibiltiy and location can visit the Association of British Drivers site at

www.abd.org.uk/

Look at the left hand menu, click on Speed and then roll down to "Speed enforcement site audit form".

All requirement are listed and I can say right now that there are no cameras that I have seen in North Wales that comply with these criteria.

So, according to the ABD and the government, the NorthWales police should not be getting any money from the fines.

Enjoy. Read more

Interesting; a grey one has just been placed behind a bush with no warning signs locally.

I was looking up headlamp prices for a friend who has a current 5 series BMW (E39) on Euro Car Parts site and was puzzled to find that the left hand light assembley complete with indicator was listed at around £186 and the same assembley but for the right hand side was listed at around £227. Why the difference ? Other than the beam pattern and direction etc. shouldn't they both be the same?

On the same subject, does anyone know whether the post facelift E39 headlamps (the ones that look like illuminated pineapple rings) will fit the older versions without any modifications?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I realised that the title may be misleading only after posting;

The query I have is regarding the considerable price difference between the nearside and offside headlamp units - around £40.
