I see the idiots at the Welsh Assembly are to introduce roadside emission checks on cars very soon. It will begin in South Wales and then might spread to the whole country.

If the car fails, there will be a £60 fine. If you can prove you have your car serviced regularly, then the fine will be reduced.

I was not aware that emission checks are part of a service. What about the chap who does his own servicing because he does not trust garages to do the job correctly?

It will do wonders for tourism in this foggy, wet little country.

"Better not go to Wales. My car might be emission tested..... £60.

I could be speed-trapped because of the Chief Constables apparant obsession with speed limit offences..... £60 and three points per offence for harming no-one.

If I break down on the A55, the police can have my car removed and taken to a compound up to 20 miles away at a cost of £120 plus £20 for every day I leave it there.

I think I'll go to Beirut. It less hassle".

And of course, that's the whole idea. Read more

Following an earlier link in particular comments about 14 days "Grace" I feel that I must clarify the porsition, lest any Backroomers finf themselves lumbered with large penalty bills from the Excise people.

What Richard Turpin says is true BUT in the event of you being summoned whilst witing for your postal application you will find yourelf in a position where the burden of proof IS ON THE ACCUSED (yes I know I'm shouting) to prove that the application was actually in process. Guess who the Bench will believe unless you have full documentary evidence of your application. Read more

Hi all.

Just looking for some advice on a screaching noise my 16v corrado has started to make.

It usually makes the noise when I first start it in the morning, or after any significant period when it is left stationary ie. when i leave work.

The fan belt is about 6months old and appears to be correctly tensioned. So I am at a loss as too what it actually is making the noise. Could it be the power steering pump drive belt.

What I am really worried about, is that it could be the timing belt tensioner. I read in HJ column that these can start to screach when there on there way out. However I dont know if this applies to my engine type or not.

Cheers
Ross

P.S. I should probably also mention that the screaching stops after an embarrasing couple of seconds after starting the car! Read more

Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up Ltd.)

If it is a sort of whining noise on start-up which dissapears quite rapidly it is most likely the oil pressure relief valve chattering on its seat as it does its job. Check your oil viscosity and quality. If it is screeching check that the correct width auxiliary belts have been fitted as well as the condition of the cambelt and tensioner.

Having had a look at one yesterday and being impressed by the versatility and overall packaging I managed to borrow it for a 1 hr test drive. Unfortunately the only available model was the Sport with low profile tyres and alloys, and I was already mindful of other peoples comments that the ride was a little choppy.
I included sections of motorway, country lanes and urban. Some observations follow:
Ride/handling
Yes it was a little choppy on poor urban/extra urban roads where the surface has seen better days, but not to the point where I could not live with it. I guess with the steel smaller wheels and ordinary tyres the ride may be a little better, but would welcome comment from anybody who has tested both versions. It stays impresively flat when cornering enthusiastically, but the slaesman insists that the sport model has stiffer supension and anti roll characteristics although the spec says nothing about this! Anybody know the answer please? The power steering appears to be speed dependent and ideal for urban but I was not convinced by the lack of feel at faster speeds. It drove like a small car, it did not feel as sure footed as my 16v 1.2 Zetec Fiesta (even with 70k on the clock) which always fells like a bigger car.

Engine /transmission
Gearbox is a delight, precise short throw, but you need to use it. I found the 5th gear flexibility poor compared with the Fiesta. Ok it it only had 500 miles on the clock and may loosen up, but I doubt it as it was very willing to rev freely. It seemed very quiet at tickover, but noisy upto 30 mph when accelerating, it then quietened down (comparitively) upto 75mph. I was not convinced that a continental 85 mph would be comfortable for several hours at a time.

When starting off the trip fuel consumption iwas showing only 34.9mpg ( over 80 miles) and despite reading the book (as a last resort) refused to reset. At the end I had a reading of 37.1 ( after about my 30 miles) so I guess that I got something around 43 mpg. Not scientific but the best I could do.

I will now go back and read the road test that somebody posted about a week ago to see what he said. I purposely did not read it in detail until after I had committed myself to print.

I will now try and get a Yaris Verso for a comparable test, anybody got any other comments? I think that from a driving point of view both my Fiesta and Golf GTI (Mk2 8v) are better but different! Read more

Fair enough. Mike Rutherford on 'Pulling Power' gave the Jazz the thumbs up on Monday night, in comparison with the new Fiesta, new Polo, new Ibiza and Citroen C3. Let's see what Mike, Jason and Penny think of it. Have to set the video to pick up 'Wrong Car, Right Car', though.

If you are using ordinary glue I would guess that it is not conductive, hence your loss of signal. Try with a multimeter to see if your joint is conductive as it is. I wonder if you could use the metal loaded conductive paint (it has been sold in the past for repairing rearscreen heater elements) painted over your glued joint to restore conductivity.

I have a theory. Each county council employs a guy to travel its roads with a spray can. He circles each pothole he finds and adds some meaningless symbols. Drivers assume that at last something is being done. Result - less hassle at County Hall. Read more

You'll have to see if the road is adopted if you want to bill the local authority. It will have all the usual street furniture, white lining, street lights etc. or phone and ask them. If not then the only way may be go after the owner of the estate. I bet there's a disclaimer somewhere though. Maybe the legal experts can help you there.
Good luck

I'm trying to find out if the injectors on the Carlton should be replaced. The car has done 98,000+. I've recently experienced an increase in petrol consumption. Any suggestions please???? Read more

Supermarket unleaded is the same as branded unleaded. It comes from the same distribution tank / pipeline. The only difference are the additives.

In answer to the original question about injectors, try using a dose of Redex Injection Cleaner every 1,000 miles.

I currently own a ford sierra 2.o lt injection which I use to tow my dandy trailer tent (aprox 300kg). The sierra is a super tow car but is now looking tatty and I am thinking of a change. Does any have any advise as I'm thinking about trying an automatic, eg honda concerto 1.6 or mitsubishi lancer 1.6/1.8.
Will I hit any gearbox problems even if I fit an extra gearbox cooler. Read more

terry

At 300kg I wouldn't think you'd need to fit additional gearbox cooling, but check manufacturer's recommendations.

I've towed various caravans (850 - 1340 kg) with assorted auto boxes from Citroen BXs, VW Golfs, Citroen XMs and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Never any overheating problems, even in deepest France climbing alps. Don't have any experience of either of your choices I'm afraid.

I took delivery of a brand new MINI ONE on March 1'.
Great car to own and drive BUT,last Tuesday I noticed several stains underneath the engine bay-I presumed an oil leak on the power steering.
Have had the car back in my local BMW dealer twice, the second timeyesterday.
The conclusion is that the oil stains are actualy oily water from the run off pipe
for the AC.
I am still not convinced. Apart from getting independent advice Im at a loss
what to do.
1.Are there any MINI owners out there with AC who have noticed similair stains
underneath their cars?.
2.Does the "oily condensation" theory ring any bells with anyone?.
Any advice would be welcome,
Cheers,
