2019 BMW 218i AT reliability and alternatives.

In 2019 I changed my 2009 BMW 116i because my family started growing and I needed more space for trollers and baby seats. I had the back then new Mazda 3(the still current model) and the BMW 2 AT shortlisted but I decided on the BMW because of the past pleasant experience, the premium materials, the twin turbo performance(after my 116i I really needed something a bit punchier) and the ground clearance for occasional short unpaved trips to a summer house. I am very disappointed with the reliability of my 2019 BMW 218i Active Tourer. It has 90.000km and I had to change engine mounts, the whole AC unit because of faulty flaps which is a known issue for BMW for years and they haven't done anything about that. Once those issues started I did a research and found out that the B38 engine is additionally prone to issues(timing chain, valves, etc..) which are known and not addressed by BMW as well. Which disappointed me in terms of the BMW actual premium quality. And I really liked the car, the drive, the engine power was very good for my needs etc. So, now I feel like what is next BMW and what is my next repair bill not by regular maintenance but poor design and poor quality materials, most of all the are known and not addressed. As a matter of fact that is why I always try to get the facelift version of the vehicles since most of the issues should be addressed by then.
Anyhow, even though I tend to keep my cars for about 10 years, I feel like I would like to depart my money pet. I did some research and my shortlist this time is: Lexus LBX, Toyota Yaris Hybrid GR Sport(130hp), Mazda CX-30 and Honda Civic Hybrid. The top of my list is the LBX because of reliability, real premium quality and the design, but the concern here is will I feel it underpowered to my BMW 218i because of the hybrid setup for efficiency even though the LBX has 136hp with 189NM which is not much different than the BMW 140hp and 220NM considering the weight difference between the two, the BMW has the turbo but the LBX the instant electric power and the second concern is the highway ability of the LBX on speeds over 130km/h. The Yaris is the cheaper alternative to the Lexus with almost similar performance and the price point is very attractive here for me. The Honda Civic Hybrid is maybe the sweet spot here(reliability, power and driving dynamics) but I am concerned with the need to replace the battery in 8-10 years time, which can be quite costly and I would like to deal with that considering the prices of the Civic. I am considering the CX-30 with the 2.0 Skyactive-X engine which is a facelift and close to price with the Yaris GT Sport so it makes more sense to me but not same reliability as the Toyota/Lexus, complex engine. Also, the advantage with Toyota/Lexus is that they do trade-in which is much more convenient for me than selling the BMW myself. I do about 15,000km a year with 70% city driving and the rest on open road(motorways and highways). I am willing to compromise space(Yaris, LBX) for reliability and I would like to keep the vehicle for 15+ years.I need a buying advice from experts like you guys and I would appreciate if you could give me your comments on my concerns as well as comments on my shortlisted vehicles or propose some other alternatives.

The first generation BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a good car, but we have seen reports from owners that have experienced reliability issues, and it is an unfortunate reality that a premium badge and a premium price tag does not necessarily guarantee you better reliability. It is often the case that reliability issues in particular cars do not reveal themselves until it has been on sale for some time and owner's examples are a few years old. Manufacturers will not issue recalls unless an issue is safety related and will not offer goodwill gestures for repairs on vehicles that are out of warranty unless there is overwhelming evidence that a fault is the result of poor design or manufacturing and a majority of vehicles are affected.

All of the options you have suggested would be a good replacement for your BMW. If reliability is paramount then the Lexus would be the obvious choice - Lexus has been name the best brand for reliability in the Honest John Satisfaction Index for five years in a row (although it is worth pointing out that the 2014-2021 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer achieved 10th place in the same survey, so your experience may not be typical). The driving experience may be different to your BMW but when choosing any car over another there is always an element of compromise. We would suggest a thorough test drive beforehand to familiarise yourself with how it drives. Replacing a hybrid battery is not a common requirement - unlike pure EVs, hybrids do not use the battery all of the time which generally means a longer lifespan. The majority of main dealers will offer a trade-in when buying a new vehicle so we would suggest exploring all the options available to you.
