If an accident is caused by a car thief - who leaves the car and is not caught - will my insurance not cover me?

Yes, if you have comprehensive cover, or third party, fire and theft, then you will be able to claim for your vehicle on your insurance. Even if the theft is considered unresolved, you should still be able to obtain a crime reference number from the police, which you will need for the claims process.
