Can I safely change my low profile tyres and wheels?

The low profile tyres on our BMW 530d xDrive are easily damaged by potholes, as are the alloy rims. Is there a safe alternative?

If you are concerned about your wheels and tyres durability in respect of potholes, one option would be to fit smaller wheels and tyres with a taller sidewall. This would provide extra impact absorption and reduce the risk of punctures, although it is important to consider that a side effect will be a slight reduction in available grip as the tyres will likely be slightly narrower than those currently fitted.
