1997 1.6 16V - gearbox problems - ashy
i bought a 1.6 16v vitara 1997. went out in it at the weekend and it started to make a rumble noise when moving in all gears apart from fourth! and now its become to a load squeeking noise! could it be the thrust bearring??could anyone help?

Sounds more like layshaft bearings in the gearbox. Are you sure that it's not in 4-wheel drive?

thanks for your quick reply. yeah its defo not stuck in 4wd. is it a big job to do the layshaft bearings or is it cheaper to get a recon gearbox?

I'd ask around your local garages to find out who's a good gearbox man locally and get them to repair it.

water in gearbox - ashy
ive drained the oil in the gearbox and there is water in it would this of caused any problems to anything else in the gearbox or transmition box?

That will very likely depend on the source of the water - if it's from off-roading, then it would contain mud and that will turn the lube into grinding paste.
