New V70 photos - SjB {P}

The page can be a little slow to load, but once it does click the link for fotoshow(15) underneath the four main photos.
You will then (unsurprisingly) see 15 slides of the new car.

Me (on the basis of these photos) no like.

Predictably a pumped up V50, but out of proportion as a result.
Quite a clanger after the super styling treatment of the new S80.
Horrid tailgate - for some reason evokes memories of a mid nineties Mitsubishi Galant estate - and the svelte lines and wonderfully convex flanks of the current V70 have been lost.

Would love to think it's a Photoshop job, but it isn't.

Perhaps a good job when we purchased our V70 2.4T in 2003 it was for long term (8+ years) ownership.

Actually very fast to load considering high Q pics.

I like it, not every detail though I think it will grow on me. Now I thought Volvo had independance on the V70 as with the S80 though the shell looks awfully like the pics of the new Mondeo wagon.

(SjB, perhaps you could have a look at a question I asked you in CRQ 118? Ta.)

I don't like this sort of melted bulging design, it all started with BMW and is out of dated already.

.... actually, I think that the hatch looks as if it's been grafted on from a Subaru Forrester.

Nice (Simple) interior.

I quite like it, twin tail pipes, tidy uncluttered interior.

One think I hate is the horizontal crease in the door panels....very vulnerable to supermarket dings.

I'm with SjB, and I'm a Volvo-owning Volvo fan....

In profile, the rear bumper arrangement looks all wrong, and I'm not too convinced by the rear lights. I was thinking of a 15-year old Mitsubishi too!

Interior is lovely (as they often are with Volvo...).

'Subaru' was my first thought on the rear view too. The interior, however, looks spot-on - and owners will spend rather more time looking at that than at the tailgate.

I wonder if it will have the option of twin pop-up boosters in the rear seat. A Volvo salesman told me recently they were no longer available on the V70, although they still appear in the latest S40 brochure.

Yup, me too a Volvo owning fan too, the latter since Dad's first, a 1972 244DL!

Regarding other posts, I agree on the interior comments, as yes, it is smart, as is the current one, but I stand by what I say about the exterior; a retrograde step in my opinion. Bland, actually. Just come in from washing mine, ruby red painwork crisp and gleaming in the winter sun, convex flanks I wrote of earlier hiding the depth of the door panels and emphasising the long, low, bodyshell that earlier today pulled the Tardis trick of swallowing two divans complete with mattresses, in one go.

Amazing similarity.

Like those posts above - I like it except the back.
BMW did something similar with the 3. Looked OK until they stuck a Mitsibushi Charisma back end on it.
Mitsibushi back end designers must be highly rated and original - now everyone is copying them.

Ashok and cardriver I had the same feeling, that it has Chris Bangle's influence. He has a lot to answer for!
I used to like the boxy but practical Volvos, I liked the more rounded Volvos that followed. We don't need bloated rounded off-boxes that are influenced by BMW. Insted we need Volvo to take design in a totaly new and exciting direction, something that has not been done.

Thank you, barchettaman!
Exactly what I recalled, though you were more successful than me in finding a photo to show it!

Not last night when I started this thread, it wasn't!
Repeatedly timing out, and then finally several minutes for a successful load of the page I linked to, then fast after that for the photo gallery.

I'm not too keen on it but at least it looks like a proper Volvo! Not too keen on the new smaller Volvos I think the interiors are like tarted up Ford Focus's

Rather similar to this!

''I wonder if it will have the option of twin pop-up boosters in the rear seat. A Volvo salesman told me recently they were no longer available on the V70, although they still appear in the latest S40 brochure''

From What Car:

''The new V70 has been designed with children in mind, too. The rear seats have integrated child booster cushions which can be set at two heights - a world first.

The lower setting is for children between 115cm and 140cm tall and weighing 22-36kg, while the upper setting is designed for children between 95cm and 129cm tall and weighing 15-25kg.

The integrated booster is accompanied by seat belts that restrain the child with just the right amount of force in an accident, and curtain airbags that stretch back the length of the cabin.''

I rather like the look of it, and I'm not really a Volvo fan.

I see from the action pics it even drives itself. Clever.

I like it, expect from the back. I think i'd still buy one, especially if the load hatch is bigger than before.

I doubt it's likely to be much worse for dings than the old V70 was.

I like the sound of the T6 engine though...

> The rear seats have integrated child booster cushions which can be set at two heights...

Splendid. The 40-20-40 split seat is a plus point too - far more versatile than a 60-40 seat with a 'ski hatch'.

That article also mentions '117bhp 2.4- or 134bhp D5 diesels', which I take to mean that they've got their bhp and kilowatts muxed ip.

Hmmm

Definately a Forester tailgate, but doesn't work on the larger car and ugly rear lights. The rest has simply too many lines. Too busy and in no way the great leap forward that the last one was.
