headlamp bulb types and prices - dylan
Can someone in the know please clarify the types of bulb currently available and the approx prices?

I've read several posts here about bulbs costing over £100. I simply will not buy a car if I know it takes one of these bulbs. Presumably there is a certain keyword ('xenon?') to look for in the car specification?

Xenon = expensive plus sometimes VERY complicated replacment problems ie front numper removed for access. Avoid if possible plus while xenons may please you they seem to annoy other drivers!

Well you have a bigger problem than your questions.

1. As far as I am aware the "expensive" bulbs you are worried about are HID bulbs.
Thes are surposed to last for years. So just enquire if the car has HID bulbs.

2. Much more difficult is finding out which cars are a pain to change ordinary bulbs due to bad access.
e.g. My 199 Mondeo requires various bits, the grill and the light units to be removed to change a bulb.
The are many reports on the forum of the costs in labour to change bulbs when access is bad.

Good luck in making you list..

My last Xenon bulbs lasted 9 years, and were still going strong.
You can get them for about £30 each if you shop around and I mean proper Philips or Osram too.
