avensis 1.8 fault light

avensis 1.8 fault light - the conductor
hi my 1998 avensis has come up with the engine management light
whilst sitting in traffic. it didnt overheat and car seems to run fine (obviously if its in limp home then its very good)
can anyone shed any help on this as i have no clue.
i have checked basics.
does this car have falicty to give flash codes or does it have to go to big bad expensive toyota?
