Hopefully " elekie&a/c doctor" can give me some help or guidance on this issue.

When getting into the car, the current mileage is showing on the LCD display, this is normal.

Upon switching the ignition key to the run position, (or in fact starting the engine), the display goes blank for about 15 seconds. Also, the temp and fuel gauges remain off. This also includes the radio not switching on.

(The engine runs absolutely fine and continues to do so).

After about 15 seconds, the LCD display switches on and displays correctly, the temp and fuel gauges go to their correct setting and the radio turns on. Everything them continuesa as perfectly normal.

I don't know what the correct procedure is, but I am thinking that maybe the CAN bus controller is running some type of checking, and for some reason getting delayed ?

The runs perfectly in all other respects, it's just this start up delay that I'm concerned about.

Any advice would be much appeciated.

I would suspect the battery is low . Just enough to start the car , but the voltage drops below critical value under cranking which causes the electronics to throw a wobbly.

Sorry, just wanted to edit in that I am not sure this car even uses the can bus system ? Can anyone confirm please ?

Thank you for your input but no, the car cranks over very quickly and fires immediately. At rest the battery is 12.8v, and is less than a year old.

It occurs always at 15 seconds after either simply putting the key to the run position, or starting the car and then the key springs back to the same (run) position.

My problem is that I have no knowledge of what the CAN BUS system does on startup (if anything at all).

One further piece of information is that the rev counter also doesn't run (like the temp and fuel gauges) until the 15 second event. After that, the car operates as if it was brand new.

This does have a basic can network that connects the dash pod to the engine control module . Not sure this is the problem. You need to check voltages at the instrument cluster under cranking condition . Have you checked all the fuses ? Some models have 3 fuses to the dash pod . Probably not worth pursuing the fault unless it really bothers you .

Thanks again for your input. I'm quickly fast becoming of the same opinion that ignoring it would be my best option.

It's just a silly niggle after all.
