Renault is turning to its sister company Nissan to help improve the reliability and durability of its cars.
The French firm’s chairman and chief executive, Louis Schweitzer, told What Car? that while Renault compared favourably to other brands, reliability was still not good enough. ‘There is still room for improvement,’ he said.
Schweitzer’s goal is to ensure that every Renault has a useful working life of 300,000km (190,000 miles), a benchmark he says that most of its models already meet.
Although he did not say which models fall short of this standard, Schweitzer did highlight the increasing electronic complexity of cars as a major cause of complaints.
In the recent JD Power survey of customer satisfaction, every Renault model finished in the bottom half of the table. The Espace was fifth from bottom overall, out of 138 models surveyed.
Schweitzer said it was a core aim of the company to improve quality and durability before he hands the helm of Renault over to current Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn next year.

So presumably prospective purchasers of a new Renault would do well to put it off until Mr Ghosn is well and truly in charge - I wonder how the new Scenic will shape up in view of it's appearance right in the middle of this apparent 'transition' period.

Let us charitably conclude, then, that all French cars appear to have been suffering from 'increasing electronic complexity' for a considerable period of time...

Look
Had Electricity been invented by a French person, then they would have execute anything electrical perfectly. As it wasnt then they do it the French way.
Which means if the electrical bits dont like you then when asked to do anything they will just shrug at you, possibly blowing a puff of Gauloises smelling insulation smoke at you.

And talking of formidable cars I well remember an encounter with a Renault 21 TXE. The'E' stood for Electronique, and this was the model that had an LED digital dashboard. First of all, this went kaput. Then the wipers failed, then the central locking failed.
C'est la vie, as they say at that garage you roll up to when you car breaks down in the middle of a French nowhere...

Yes but the Italians had a lot to do with the discovery of electricity (Galvani, Volta et al) and Italian electrics are junk too!

I may be tempting fate here but my Megane has been the most reliable car I've ever had! 51000 miles, 5 years old, nothing has ever gone wrong (touching wood here!). Tyres did 30K on the front, rears are original, even the exhaust is original! It's been a lot better than a previous VW Golf I once owned.
