Shortly after taking delivery of my car in Dec last year I noticed that despite the engine warming up as normal the engine was idling at around 1100 revs when I came to a standstill. Obviously at this speed the engine stop start will not kick in and therefore I assume that I am wasting fuel. This also occurs after long journey's, for instance I drove from Manchester to Accrington this morning and upon arrival and as usual the engine when stationary was at 1100 rpm. I have had it into the VW dealer in Stockport who tell me that there is nothing wrong with it as if there was this would show up on the diagnostic test that they do. I have even driven from Manchester to the Midlands with the same result, surely this cannot be correct? On occasions it does idle at 800-900 and of course the stop start does kick in but this is not often. Also I have experienced on a couple of occasions a loss of power when setting off and although the revs appear to be increasing on the dial I get virtually no acceleration from the car. If I stop and switch off it appears to rectify itself. Most of my journeys are on the motorway where I travel at no more than 65 mph and I am averaging 64.8 mpg.

I assume this is a manual gearbox car ...

The higher revs while at standstill is deliberate. It puts less stress on the clutch/DMF when you start to move.

A lot of newer cars do it. On my 2013 BMW, it's exactly the same. You can make the revs drop to 800 or so by putting the car out of gear, or by depressing the clutch to the stop, or by applying the handbrake.

Yes it is a manual, sorry if I did not explain myself better in my post but the engine is idling at 1100 when I depress the clutch or put it out of gear or even when the handbrake is applied, no difference it just sits there idling at 1100 this is after a 100 mile trip to the Midlands!!

As the car is only one year old take it back to VW, use a different garage as the last one doesn't sound very competent.

There will probably be a sensor giving incorrect info back to the ECU, possibly the coolant temp sensor.

This wouldn't nescessarily bring up a fault code.

If they check all the live date from the various sensors they should be able to identify the faulty component.
