Ford focus 1.6 TDCi 2012 onwards - "plastic turbo" - Bryan Mann

i've been looking at buying a ford focus 1.6 tdci on a 2012 plate, my mechanic has told me to avoid the diesel as it has a mainly plastic turbo that has a habit of shattering under hard driving and going on to wreck the engine, I do 12000+ motorway miles a year, can you tell me if anyone has heard this before

Well the turbo just can't be plastic,

it'd melt in the hot exhaust gasses.

Housings perhaps.

I think your mechanic needs to get out more. This is complete rubbish. Most of the pipe work is plastic and flexible rubber,as it is on most modern cars. The turbo is made of various metal aluminium construction. This engine was previously known as the diesel of doom, but models made after 2012 seem to be improved.

As mentioned, these turbo's fail if they are not looked after, correct oil and serving in paramount. Ford source these units from Peugeot under a joint venture, I did post something a while ago about the durability of these engines. From 2012, the dv6C series seem to be more relaibale with modifications to the furbo oil feed pipes.

Personally I would stick with the 6,000 service intervals as per the older generation of cars and if the service book is stamped ask to see the actual invoices before buying the car

The 1.6 tdci does hae a history of turbo failure usually oilway/gauze related - although some say it's made of putty (tongue in cheek),

Enjoy the VRS

We bought a C-Max 1.6 TDCi 110 PS new in 2005. It was correctly serviced from new using the correct oils etc and we never had an issue. Sold it on at 5 years old to a local chap who was using it trouble free until last September when it failed its MOT, not sure why but the car is still on a SORN.

That was 12 years good service.

As they say, look after it and it will look after you.

I think you need a new mechanic if he thinks any part of a turbo, past or present, is made of plastic.
