Volkswagen Polo won't start

I own a 2003 Volkswagen Polo. It has a 1.4 petrol engine, automatic gearbox and has covered 90,000 miles. Recently it developed an intermittent start-up problem. The starter motor works fine, but the engine won't kick into life. I've checked the battery and replaced the fuel pump, but no joy. My local garage says it could be anything. Any advice?

The local garage is somewhat correct in that it could be many things, most likely one of the sensors that are fitted. Did the garage carry out a diagnostic check ? This could show up a fault code ( ie P---- 4 numbers) which can then be related to the actual problem. Other than that if we were to suspect any sensor, it would be the CKP (crankshaft position sensor). You could get the garage to check it out.
