My Scenic's interior light stayed one?

I left the Scenic and the interior light and boot light did not go off as they usually do. I checked the switch and could not switch it off at all. There was nothing wrong with any doors or door closing areas.

So all I could do was leave it and the battery is now dead. No point jump-starting until I rectify the fault.

What would make those lights stay on permanently, and where should I look to repair it?

The switch. But the simple answer is to remove the bulb from the socket, then the circuit cannot complete and there will be no drain.

I note your advice to avoid flat batteries by switching off lights and removing the boot light bulb. It may be worth mentioning the bulb in the glove box, if there is one. In 2008, I had a flat battery...
