How can I check if the clutch is failing on my car?

My car feels like the clutch is slipping under load. There's no smell at all and it has been the same for the last 8000 miles. How can I check?

Put the car into third gear, apply the handbrake and try to drive forward. If the engine stalls then the clutch should be okay, if, however, the engine continues to run (although a little slower) then the clutch is on its way out.
