Ford Fiesta 1998 - Dragging brakes after new drums and shoes 30 Aug 2011 (Forum)
I have an old Ford Fiesta thats done 120k, the handbrake had been very poor recently and after some failed attempts to fix it I bit the bullet and both the drums and shoes yesterday. The handbrake now works great (hurray!) but the brake shoes seem to be touching the drums all the time, even with the handbrake cable fully slack. I was hoping it would loosen up after a bit of driving, instead the drums were getting hot and one of the rear brakes then starts making a clunking noise at low speeds. -
Clio 1.2 16V Petrol - Odd whining sound from 2002 Clio 5 Jun 2011 (Forum)
It seems to come on after the car has travelled at over 60/70MPH when I am driving back in a 30 limit. It definitely sounds like its something to do with the wheels or brakes and not the engine running since it only happens when the car is moving. It seems to stop when the brakes are applied so I wonder if it is something to do with the brakes. The car has done 69K and has had a cambelt change (don't know if this would be relevant or not) If someone could help that would be very much appreciated, I'm slightly concerned that it could be the brakes rubbing Thanks in advance! -
53 reg - Ford Focus Auto 1.6 - Ford Focus - Brake Fluid 5 Jan 2011 (Forum)
I bought the car 2nd hand last October; it's already had a driver side wheel bearing replaced (at the expense of the garage that sold it to me) and was given new front brake pads before I took it away. Thanks for any advice/guidance -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 04 Feels like it's scraping the road when braking 7 Feb 2010 (Forum)
My 1.6 Golf was serviced 2 weeks ago at VW main dealership and since then, on 3 occasions, when I was braking quite sharply, it feels as though the bottom of the car by the brake pedal is scraping the road. As it happened for the 3rd time today I'm definitely going to get the garage that serviced it to look at it, but in the mean time, does anyone know what might be causing this? -
Nissan Micra (1983 - 1992) - 88 1.0 Lubricating front brake sliders with rubber 3 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Lubricating front brake sliders with rubber seals ------------------------------------------------------------------ My car has just been through MOT, one of front brakes was binding. When I checked it, one of sliders was stuck which I have freed & lubricated with some spray 3 in 1 oil & spray grease or castrol LM Grease. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.6 Rusty rear brake drums 17 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Could I ask Backroomers if they have any comments on Hammerite for this use and/or any comparative experience of hammered vs smooth finish? Also, has anyone got a better suggestion than Hammerite for painting brake drums? Many thanks Waino. -
Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 03 2.0 Front brake pads 1 May 2008 (Forum)
Should I get them checked by the dealership or shall I just wait til the MOT in July - the dealership will be doing it? Also, the braking doesn't feel any better to me. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.8 petrol Exhaust Heat Shield & Hand Brake 1 Apr 2008 (Forum)
It failed on one of the checks only: When the handbrake is applied, it applies only 11% percent pull on the rear right hand wheel. 11% is below the legal minimum requirement. In other words the parking brake for the right handside rear wheel has a "low effort". The parking brake effort for the rear left hand wheel is fine. THANKS Roses are red, Violets are blue, How about adding the year/engine info, Like we have asked you to do! -
Nissan Primera III (1999 - 2002) - Noisy brakes -- garages say nothing wrong 8 Oct 2007 (Forum)
From another post, thought I'd repost here as this is beginning to hack me off.... I'm not at all happy with the noisy brake pads put on by garage at the last service (4000 miles ago) -- they claim it's down to the materials on "modern" pads, but how come other cars don't suffer the same way? Two other mechanics have found nothing wrong with the brakes, but I'm not satisfied. -
Thank you VW, thank you so much, 10 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Yup it was the brake lights, so I kicked the brake pedal and off they went. Hmm I think, I will have to check they are off every time I get out the car. So last night, before I went to bed, I checked they were off. Touran is very clever, he is not just having a sticky brake light switch, he is turning the damn things on, by his self, in the middle of the night. -
Brake pad dust 27 Jul 2005 (Forum)
My Scenic recently had squealing brakes and when I asked the dealer they said this is normal and is due to lack of asbestos etc and it is not covered by warranty (1 year old). They would strip them down but it would be chargeable. I blasted them with my power hose and this seems to have made a bit of an impact for now. -
2002 - Punto 1.2 3 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I have a 2002 Basic four door 1.2 Punto 18k on clock, and in May I had a full service. It was highlighted that I needed new brake pads (front) and they fitted them accordingly. However, 5k on there is a squeeling sound about ever 4 out of 6 presses of the brake from the front. If I brake hard, not an emergency stop, the brakes do not squeel. -
New car warranty 19 May 2004 (Forum)
I own a 2 year renault clio expression, done 29000 miles and has service history with renault. This week my rear brakes failed due to the brake shoes coming loose and disintegrating within the wheel. The dust from the shoes built up and jammed my wheels up. When I took it to the dealer at first they fited a new clutch. when the car jammed again the AA towed the car to the dealer. -
cavalier brakes 15 Apr 2004 (Forum)
At the end of the job my wife, who had been topping up, commented on how little fluid she had had to put in. Subsequently the brakes are now spongy and I will have to have another go. Compared to attempts over the years this seems to have not been a success. What could be causing the problem-master cylinder maybe? Thank you. -
Golf brake failure 2 28 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Continuing on from the post about fluid leaking from the brake pipe banjo-to-caliper joint. Tried to get it done at 2 local VW dealers today expecting them to turn up and just fit a new washer or whatever, bleed the brakes and disappear. Not a bit of it; they want the car on a ramp for over an hour to fit a new pipe, not just a washer and guess what - there aren't any blessed pipes IN THE COUNTRY. -

I'm about to renew the rear pads on my Golf. Is it necessary to buy a special tool to rewind the pistons or is there a cheaper way?
