  • mondeo 03 reg - brake prob? 27 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I have now noticed what I can only described as a grating sound? This is present on braking but also intermittently when driving along, as though the brakes are binding somehow (and this may sound stupid but is when driving is is more pronounced when the car is driving left round a bend!) I want to take the car back to the same garage but don't know wnough about cars and want to know if this is the front brakes, and if so why is this problem occuring when the discs and pads have been replaced and if it is something else why was it not picked up as an advisory in the mot?

  • Driving home for Christmas 2009 20 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I started a similar thread last year which produced some interesting replies, so let's hear what your are up to for Christmas, 2009. I'll be finishing work around normal time on Christmas Eve and driving the 40-odd miles down the A1(M) to my caravan in leafy North Yorkshire. Christmas Day it's across to Southport - about 100 miles from the 'van - to meet family in a hotel for an evening meal. Looks like my Christmas lunch will be a cheese sandwich and a bag of crisps in a layby somewhere on the way.
  • Skoda - My Car Is Too Dangerous To Drive! 9 Dec 2009 (Forum)
An old & respected friend sat in my new Octavia after I'd sat in his new BMW. He said that he would not be able to drive my car safely , as he could not reach the brake pedal without lifting his foot off the floor. The brake pedal is indeed a couple of inches above the accelerator even at rest. In the BMW you just slide across to the brake pedal , keeping your heel on the carpet.

  • Volvo S80 (2006 - ) - honest john have you test driven a ! 22 Jul 2009 (Forum)
this is for honest john or anyone who has test drove the new volvo s80 (my10) today i have driven the new s80 2.0d se lux (my10) but when i was driving it a found a major problem ( i think its major) it felt like i was driving it with 4 flat tyres the handling was very bad. i pulled out to over take a car and it was all over the place. mainly over 60mph the slightest jolt on the streering wheel and it felt like i was snaking and lots of body roll. when i asked if it should drive like that i was told its the new supension set up. well all i can say is that if that is the case then i can see lots of buyers taking them back.....
  • Rover 45 (1999 - 2005) - 00 1.8 Never starts first time/stalls on Drive 29 Apr 2009 (Forum)
s suffered from the same fault since I bought it: it rarely starts first time, needing between 2 and 10 attempts to turn the engine over before it will start. Then, once the engine is running, it stalls as soon as I put the car into Drive. Once I?ve been through that whole routine at the start of the day, it?s fine. I took it back to the garage a few times after buying it, but they always claimed it started for them, so they couldn?
  • Polite Sign in rear window 27 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Was driving home on Monday afternoon and was behind a W reg Ford Fiesta, it had a fairly large poster in it's back window that read: (or pretty much read) I have recently been 'done' for speeding for the 1st time 34MPH in a 30MPH zone, it's cost me points and a fine I'm driving slowly because of this...
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 05 1.8 Has the Auxiliary drive belt tensioner seiz 22 Dec 2008 (Forum)
MK 1 Petrol version (old shape) 65k miles Evening BRs Hope you can offer some advice. Drive belt which runs the power steering/aircon/alternator has worn out. It slips worst first thing in the morning. Bought a new belt and went to slacken the tensioner as per the Haynes manual by turning the bolt in the middle.
  • Lexus IS250/220D (2005 - ) - 07 2.5 New Clutch after 3,500 miles ???? 8 Oct 2008 (Forum)
He has often thought that the clutch has a high biting point but this week his missus has taken it for it's first service. The dealers have said it needs a NEW CLUTCH through bad driving and want a grand for a new clutch. They are adamant that they will not contribute putting it down to wear and tear and simply said it's bad driving. I am a trained police driver and have seen him drive quite often and would never say he is a bad driver.
  • Vauxhall Cavalier (1988 - 1995) - 94 2.0 Mk 3 DOHC Ecotec Petrol - Clutch Change 7 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I tried to change the clutch with the gearbox insitu, following the Haynes Manual. After removing the end cover I was unable to withdraw the drive shaft as there was no thread in the shaft to attach the slide hammer. There is no end cover bolt on the drive shaft. I have done this before on an Mk 2 I used to own. The local Vauxhall dealer was helpful and showed me detailed diagrams, none of which matched the car.
  • Puzzling driving test question 21 Apr 2008 (Forum)
My son is about to sit his driving test and we've been going through the practical questions that now form part of the test. Most are sensible (how to check levels, tyres etc) but one seems really odd to me - Question "Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear."
  • The Cotswolds crash 10 Mar 2008 (Forum)
so 7 dead....I'm deliberately not going to say what i'm really thinking out of respect for those that have died, (inc the person who's caused it)....and....the two parents sat in different hospitals hoping to hell that their kids make it however, what's the betting there'll be a speed camera there after this and/or road lane changes/double white lines etc.......when in all likelihood the real reason is poor driving from a person with a history of poor driving, who in my opinion was dealt with particularly leniently on the last occasion, if the news headlines are to be believed. Furthermore there are plenty like it driving around with impunity, you see them every day.
  • Insurance for 17 year old 6 Mar 2008 (Forum)
My 17 year old son is currently taking driving lessons and I'm trying to organise some insurance for one of the family cars (both for pre- and post-test driving). Assuming a Fiesta 1.25 finesse (wife's car) any experience on the cheapest company?
  • Nissan Primera III (1999 - 2002) - V reg - 2 litre auto - Lights flicker 13 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Went to look at a V reg Nissan Primera yesterday. It was a 2L auto. Very good condition and very nice to drive. However, because I got there just after 3pm by the time I had a good look around it it was dark when I took it for a drive. I took it for a drive and when I came back I parked and notice the oil light was faintly flickering, not just this light was the problem.
  • Section 172 RTA 1988 10 Jan 2008 (Forum)
The notice refers to a registration number that does not relate to the car that she was driving. The plate recorded is AB00CDE and the car was AB00XDE. The alleged offence took place on 10 November 2007 and the s172 notice is dated 16 December. As I see it Daughter can complete Parts 1 & 2 altering the registration number, or part 3 saying 'she has no knowledge of who was driving AB00CDE'.
  • Bent crankshaft auxiliary belt pulley 26 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I have a 2003 Saab 9-5 2.2 Tid which recently had its water pump replaced after it had been leaking pretty badly for about a week. A week or so later it shredded and threw off the auxiliary drive belt - driving the ACC, power steering, water pump (not the timing belt, fortunately). This was repaired at the roadside but it has now partially shredded the new drive belt again some fifty miles later.
  • Suzuki Ignis - any experience? 27 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I'm getting a Suzuki Ignis (1.3 GL 5-dr) 06 plate with 6500 miles for £5000 from Suzuki dealer. The test drive was fine, like the driving and the car. Looks quite practical too. Especially I like the high driving position. But looks like very few people actually own it (wondering why?) I have googled some reviews on the internet, apart from low resale value no one said the car is bad in anyway.
  • audi a6 avant 2.0 tdi - opinions? 23 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I was wondering if anyone has experience of these cars. I am a bit concerned it will be a bit slow after my 2.4 accord. I will be test driving at some point, but interested in real life opinions. I always enjoy a change of car and have been driving a transit all week and really enjoyed it, so a short test drive may not give me the best impression of living with a car!
