When a clutch is dismantled it is quite easy to tell how the car has been driven & if its been ridden excessivley ( which on a diesel is very little).
If it smells it been overheated . If the plate is worn on the clutch coverside more than the flywheel side its had heavey use. If its worn more on the flywheel side its had very good use. If you suspect the clutch spring is weak or broken look inside the cover for a crack or uneven spring diaphram.
I have to say if it was diesel it would of been no suprise but a petrol one is another story. I think you may need an expert their when the clutch is removed.
A visit to a second dealer may prove worth while.
